For your first AR, get a 20” A2 or A4, keep the carry handle on and learn how to use the iron sights. The 20” rifle length upper with rifle buffer will be the most reliable and softest shooting right out the box.
You can get the rifle, a few mags, EPT trigger and 250 rounds of ammo for under a grand. That’s a great way to start, then later if you want you can buy a different upper / stock setup if you want. Also with a A4 upper you can eventually take the carry handle off and add an optic.
