I have been doing a lot of reading and looking at NFA gun boards and getting ready to make a purchase - I'd love a FA AK-47, but what little common sense I have tells me to start with something less expensive and I will probably go with some type of MAC - I'd appreciate feedback on a few questions.

The main difference between a MAC 10 and a MAC 11 is that the MAC 11 is smaller and lighter - right?

Ammo prices are certainly a consideration - from what I can see, at today's ammo prices, 9mm is the most cost effective round - right?

Any specific manufacturers or configurations that are more highly regarded as far as quality? Any to avoid?

I would like to be able to shoot 22LR through the MAC - it looks like there are a few different add-ons I could purchase to do this - would I need to have a gunsmith do this, or would the level of difficulty be like working on my AR-15 semi automatic?

I'm not necessarily interested in a silencer, but I do want a longer barrel - does the longer barrel need to go on a separate Form 4? What MAC modifications would require a separate Form 4?

I really want an HK auto sear and some host guns, but i will probably start off small with something like an M11 9mm.

Thanks, dday - great site - I'm on the waiting list for the Lage 22 LR conversion kit.

Any suggestions on the best way to find a MAC 11 9mm for sale here in Texas? I'm finding out that the dealer-to-dealer-to-dealer fees can add up pretty quick purchasing an out of state FA weapon.

Also, if buying from an individual, understanding that the paperwork takes a while and they the sellor will probably want their money up front, that looks like I'm the one doing all the trusting - any suggestions, besides me learning to be a more trusting individual?

IMO, I would save your cash and get a full auto that is more versatile. Either a sear from HK or FN might be a good choice. You could do a Lightning link or other AR/M16 type of conversion device.

There are a few reasons for my logic. First, unless you just want to "spray and pray", the MAC style weapon is hard (for most) to shoot at over 10 yards. Worse on F/A.

Other than the .22 conversion, what else can you shoot in it ?

I, personally like the HK sear. Buy one weapon (with a full auto sear and lower ) and have fun with that until you can afford other "host" weapons. Try to shoot a .308 out of a MAC !

Of course, you may just want to "spray" and that might be enough full auto for you. Not me, I have the ability to put my sear in anything from a .9mm, MP5K type weapon ( close to a MAK ), all the way to a converted HK91, to a belt fed HK21E, in .308.

My thinking is why buy something that I would either not shoot anymore or sell and have to deal with more tax stamps, BATFE, etc. I have one sear that I will probably die with.

I know that 12K is a lot of cash for a HK sear. I think a RLL (registered lightning link ) is abour $7500.00 right now. You can use it in lots of AR- lowers (without sear block shelves ) and then can use different uppers. Again, versatile is the key word.

Everything has its pro's and con's. Just dont be penny wise and pound foolish. Save up for what you REALLY want. If you have the "F/A itch" bad, learn to bump fire or get a LEGAL Tac trigger until you get enough funds.

I would try and find a dealer here in town. There are a small handful. I don't think that you should have a hard time finding a MAC. I think that there were two transferable M11 9s at the last market hall gun show. At least if it is someone here in town you can look at it before you buy it, and possibly see it shoot. Or start saving for that Multi caliber HK transferable auto sear.

You just have to write up a bill of sale stating that if the weapon does not transfer, that you get a full refund. You will also be getting a Form 4 from them, signed, with all the weapon info (S#, model #, etc ) What I did was ask for a copy of HIS Form 4, when he bought the weapon. I figured that if the guy ran off with my money, at least I had a signed bill of sale and all the info to report him to the BATFE, police, etc.

Trust me, I feel your pain. I gave 20K to a guy and he gave me a piece of paper. Was the longest 10 weeks of my life, waiting to get approved.

Was well WORTH IT !

Check these boards and buy from someone you can verify. You may be able to find something in Texas as it is a large state with a lot of NFA folks.

I have a Mac11 and think its a hoot but more of a toy. The 22kit is a plus and might make a big difference for you. If you have never done an NFA transfer buying a 22 suppressor is a great way to learn the ropes cheap. Of all my toys my 22 cans see the most use. You should be able to find a dealer with in-stock inventory in Dallas with minimal effort.

Thanks very much for all the help - I'm learning a lot. I'm still focused on a MAC, versus what I really want - what I REALLY want is a full auto AK-47 - but the price difference is just too much for me with this economy - so it's gonna be a MAC. I've found a local dealer here in Dallas that has an ANIB gun - he's asking $3300 - not new, but comes with a factory box and the factory accessories - he says that he figures there have been at most a couple of mags through it - no modifications like Sten mags or anything like that.

I'm going to meet with him to look the gun over before starting the transaction and the transfer paperwork - aside from looking at exterior cosmetics like scratches and such, what are the primary things I should be looking for on this type of gun ? Are there any key problem indicators I should be looking for? Any known problem areas (manufacturing defects) I can inspect for?

Well, I looked at the gun and it was fine - so, we started the process - I gave the dealer a check, got my fingerprint cards done at the Carrollton PD and mug shots at Kinkos, got the two copies of the Form 4 signed by the sellor from the dealer, and brought it all up to the Denton County Sherriff - he turned it around in 1 day, so now it'll be off to the BATFE with my $200 check.

Now I learn all about patience, I guess . . .
