What are the restrictions for carrying firearms off shore
recently hearing of the pirates hijacking a french yacht off the coast of Somalia, I'm curious what (if any) regulations there are against carrying firearms on privately owned vessels both within a state/country's airspace and further out.

There are no restrictions for having arms on a vessel in international waters. The reason shipping companies can't arm the crew or hire armed security teams has to do with ports. Many of the ports are in countries with very restrictive gun control laws. A good example would be Mexico. If you left port in Galveston, legally in possession of firearms, and sailed into international waters there wouldn't be a problem. However, if you cross into Mexico's territorial waters with the weapons you would be subject to arrest and prosecution for violating Mexican gun laws. Same as carrying a firearm in your vehicle in TX, and crossing into Mexico via car.

I don't have all the details but I believe international waters are governed by United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Yep God forbid you carry a gun to protect yourself or your family, they'll lock you up for half your life. Now if you're carrying a gun with the intention of murdering a police officer and beheading him well then it's A-OK in Mexico.

Since we digressed from carrying weapons afloat away from the US to discussing Mexico's anti-gun laws, I had a couple of thoughts to add:
Mexico's history of governmental instability and revolutions seem to bear out the idea that who or whatever is in power there do not want opposition. Similiar to the thinking of democrats and liberal, obamanites.... Some years ago a young man working with the local termite exterminators, who came from Mexico told me that lots of people down there had FA AK47s which he referred to as "cuernos" meaning like a curved ram's horn, alluding to the curved AK magazine. Said they kept theirs in an old stripped out automobile automatic transmission. People would get out their firearms on special occasions and fire them into the air. Sort of like we do American fireworks on the 4th of July. This was prior to the Cartel's War and murders....
