9mm is perfectly sufficient for self defense. The most important thing is if the gun feels comfortable, and if it's easy to operate for YOU. Guns are a very personal preference, so buy something that works for you. Not to mention you'd get the added benefit of pissing Big off. lol j/k

I owned one for a time and never had a problem with it. It was very comfortable and quite accurate. The only thing I had an issue with was the lack of night sights when I bought it. I eventually got interested in having some put on but discovered that it would be an expensive ordeal. For the money it would cost me to get night sights put on, I spent the same amount on a Glock 17 with factory night sights when I traded the M&P in.

I do know that the DEA has just put it on there approved carry list. The M&P held up well under their testing of it.

I think that it is well suited for the smaller hand/stature person.

I PROMISE the .9mm, with 17+1 ( Full Size Frame )capacity and some GOOD defensive rounds in it, won't no one call your .9mm STUPID !

My daughter just bought a M&P 9mm compact. She really liked the feel and after some research it looked like a solid pistol. The extra backstraps that allow you to adjust the grip size are a real bonus. She hasn't shot it yet but said she would let me know as soon as she did. She was orginally looking at the .40 compact model but wound up with the 9mm on advice of many FTW cops who carry them off-duty.

I have a full sized one. I've shot a few hundred rounds at the range without a hitch. One of these days I plan to eventually try IDPA with it.

It's well balanced and has minimal recoil. The contoured grooves in the neck of the grip provides a path for my thumb and trigger finger to travel along. The grip is the most ergonomic I've tried and the interchangeable backstraps give an almost custom fit. The controls can be switched (ambidexterous) if necessary for left handed shooters.

The trigger was a little stiff in the beginning (the spec sheet said 6.5lb but it measured at 7lb originally); but with a lot of dry firing, it has become smoother. I usually can not reach the mag release with my thumb on other guns, but this mag release is easy for me to reach and use.

It is very easy to breakdown and put back together for cleaning -- which is sometimes a feature that is overlooked people & forget to add to the checklist when evaluating a gun to purchase.

Overall, it's one of the nicest guns I've shot (aside from a 9mm 1911) -- which is a whole different discussion!!

(Okie, you knew this was coming)

I've got two, a full size and a Pro. I've shot pretty close to 10,200 rounds through the full size and only about 350 rounds through the Pro (just got it). I had to replace the striker on the FS recentely because it snapped off. Now, this is after I was done polishing it with some sand paper. I dont know if this is coincedence or what, but if the gun can go over 10k rounds without breaking, then it's good to go in my book. In reality I only need it to go bang 18 times without failing, so statiscally I'm doing ok. Keep in mind, this is only my FS. I dont trust the Pro because it hasnt accomplished the same thing (yet).

Most people dont have a problem with theirs. If you do, then S&W has really good customer service.

    Ms. Big,
Try out the Kel Tec PF-9. If you have small hands then you will like it. The finish is rough, but at the price under $300. you can't beat it. If you get in a shooting the cops are going to confiscate it. At that price you can buy two. One as a back up. I took a Dremel and sanded all the mold flashings off and installed a Hogue Handall on it. It took a lot of the felt recoil out and made it comfortable to shoot.
