Car stereo work is pretty easy to do yourself if you have some basic mechanical ability. What is the make, model, and year of your car?

Absolutely that counts. If you have a few simple tools you should be able to do this. Screw drivers, wire strippers/crimpers, and a multimeter are all you should really need. Do you know if the other speakers are working and just not hooked up, or are they possibly blown.

Running new wires can be a PITA, but may be well worth it depending on what you get. The multimeter is a great tool to have just to diagnose any issues in the system. You don't have to buy a $100 Fluke multimeter. For the amount I imagine you would use it a $30 will work fine.

I would really doubt that the wires aren't there. There is no real reason to remove them unless you are upgrading. Also, about the carport thing, get a headunit with a removeable faceplate, most car stereo thiefs won't bother stealing them this way as they don't work. The common smash and grab bum isn't deterred though.
