If I get the 243 I'd use my 06 for pigs and the 243 for deer out to 3. I wouldn't dream of trying to kill a deer at 600 with a 243 but a target, I'd try that.

I changed my first post to clear up the misinformation on my part. I do not plan on shooting any game animal out passed 400 yards with anything. I might try and shoot targets out to 600 yards if I get the chance. I want to know how accurate these rounds are in general. I know what they will do to deer at 400 yards. And yes with a 243 I'd take a shot on a deer at 400 yards if I knew I could hit it properly.

Oh yeah I wanted to get a mid to long range 308 set up, until I saw how mutch even an entry level set up was. I found an entry level savage 10 fp .308 for $590 and a decent Nikon or Leopold scope for a little more than the rifle. Now I just want a deer rifle and cartridge that will do 400 on a deer.

And another reason I'm leaning towards the 243 is that my wife might take over this rifle when I get my 30-06 finished.

400 is a big difference, I would consider any of those calibers, but the .243 is going to be placement specific.

I would go .308, and install a muzzle brake. Your wife will shoot it with the brake, as it will have little recoil like the .243.

I just thought of an up side to the 243. It would make a great yote rifle but then again so would the 7mm-08. I'm still a ways off from buying one but I'm starting my research now. I think it's mostly between those two right now. But I don't know.

http://www.shootingtimes.com/ballist...inchester.html .243

And 30-06 just for fun

I've been shooting .308 for several years and I am fond of it. Where I hunt there isn't enough open area in most places to take a 300 yard or more shot but I'm confident that the .308 will bring down anything I'm after with a good shot at that range.

For shooting long range at targets, I think the .243 would be a great choice. There are a lot of nice match bullets in 6mm thanks to benchrest shooters, and if you loaded heavier bullets you could get one hell of a ballistic coefficient going on.
