You underestimate greed. Tankers will get through so that oil sellers can make money. Case in point - Russia. Whose military will stop them? Viet Nam's? Singapore's? The Sino-American Mutual Defense Treaty was unilaterally abrogated by Jimmy Carter after I graduated high school. I grew up in a time when such a treaty did exist and I have problems remembering that our commitment to defend Taiwan since then has basically become a bunch of weasel-worded promises from (I think all) presidents since then, even Biden.

I would argue that Trump truly is an isolationist. According to his own words. His version of America first is isolationist.

Agree that deterrence is better than reaction. But China may not be deterred by commercial threats (and most likely will not be) when they decide to take Taiwan.

Trump has from the beginning said he is not an isolationist. He demonstrated that by his actions. He made a lot of deals with foreign nations. They respect him for that. And for doing what he said he would do. Unlike most of the lying swamp creatures in DC.

I was young when I first read about China during WWII. In my library are copies of Theadore White's "Insearch of History" (he saw the Henan Famine 1st hand.) The 2nd book was Herbert Yardley's "Chinese Black Chamber" (his history of helping Chiang Kai-shek with Cryptography. Yardley was black balled by our own military because what he did after WWI. He wrote a book.)

Historically the Chinese People were good customers and allies of the USA, until the Chinese Communist took over. We sold them farm products for a long time. Since WWII we have had a long history of supporting ROC, and they are incredible people. The ChiComs are another matter. They do not see the world like the ROC or the USA. Communist murder their opposition, it is the only way they stay in power. Terrible price for a nation. No room to blossom.
