When I was in high school, the town had a little festival that included a beauty pageant for grandmothers. The winner was 32 years old.
The town council reversed the judges ruling (which was based strongly on the fervent support of the male half of the audience) by retroactively enforcing a new, made-up-on-the-spot minimum age rule.
All sorts of folks got upset for a variety of reasons. The dust-up actually got big enough to make the front page of the local newspaper.
Growing up in a small town can sometimes be really weird.
