That stinks. I can see how they would think the slow train going by was it and tried to go on their call. Not sure they would have seen the second train.

I still look both ways when doing train tracks; lights and arms be damned. I honestly wish they would clear more space to see up track better. In some places they have fences and stuff obstructing the view. Heck in other the rr doesn’t maintain squat and you have shrubs blocking visibility.

There is a set of tracks complete with arms in a small town in West Texas. They have a red light appx 75' before the tracks. Pulled up and stopped one day headed home from camping. I was pulling my 5th wheel trailer. I noticed the arms were down but no train in sight. The light turned green and the arms raised at the same time. I started off and about the time got within 10ft of the arms they started back down. No way to stop doing probably 15 MPH and the rv is 13' tall. I said a lot of choice words but never heard a crash. Pulled over just the other side of the tracks and evidently they changed their mind and went back up. No damage. I sure was relieved.

I can't think of a single incident where a vehicle has beaten out train.
Not saying he won but years back there was a news story of a truck that was carrying a roll of steel. The type where one roll was the whole load.

Amtrack type train hit the trailer where the roll was and the roll went through the first three cars.

I rode the Tex-Mex Express on the Texas-Mexican Railway about 30 years ago, 2 round trips, and had a vehicle-train collision all 4 rides! This included a woman somewhere in rural South Texas (flat desert) that T-boned the 3rd car of a 5-car train, ripping the front of her then-new S-10 Blazer off.
The cops in this video should've heard the oncoming train horn, the Doppler Effect was quite pronounced. There's a reason RR crossings say "2 TRACKS" when there's 2 tracks, this video graphically illustrated that reason!

Truckload of rebar, driver drove through despite the warning lights being activated. It came out later that his license should have been suspended for numerous traffic offenses, and he was way over hours-of-service; driver served time in prison but nowhere near enough!

I finally was able to watch the video.
What are the odds of two trains at the same time?
Obviously any noise he heard could easily be attributed to the train he saw.

In San Marcos, it is quite frequent. Had that happen earlier in the week.

Yea, the NEED to necessitate 2-way traffic in that area justifies a second track? That would mean the odds are actually pretty good.

My dad worked for the railroads for 40 years. My grandfather before him. People are really really stupid. I used to think I was not that smart, then I taught for a while and interacted with the general public. People run the tracks all the time. Many times they pay for it. The lights were still flashing in the video. The deputy was breaking a law and he/she almost died for it at the very least that person should not be a law enforcement officer ever again in any jurisdiction.

"Texas law requires motorists to yield the right of way to trains. It is also against the law to cross tracks if a train is visible or to drive around gates that have been lowered at a railroad crossing. If the gates are down and no train is coming, the road is closed."

    That place east of Waco....
IIRC, it was somewhere around Dunlay circa 1976 when I was driving my Dad's Cadillac, windows up, radio blaring, with 6 girls carrying on 8 conversations at the top of their lungs. It was about midnite and we were on some little piece of pavement out in the boonies. I came up to a train crossing that was not just uncontrolled but heavily wooded on both sides. You couldn't see if anything was coming or going. (ETA - In that moment, I actually didn't know it was a train crossing. I started slowing simply because it was a huge bump in the road.)

But something was wrong even though I didn't know what. My sensory inputs changed and I didn't realize until afterward how. In any event, I slowed to a stop and the train blew right past us at very high speed, 5 feet off the front bumper.

All the talk stopped. Someone turned off the radio. Every girl in that car thanked me with a sincerity I haven't heard before or since. We had all been touched by crossing mishaps where someone we knew or loved had died or been seriously injured. It was a big problem in that area in those days. So everyone in the car knew they had cheated death; it was a very, very sobering incident for all of us.

Oh, the sensory inputs? I didn't know the train was coming because I couldn't hear it and couldn't see it. However, the train headlight was dancing on the trees in front of me and my brain couldn't make sense of what I was seeing. I stopped for that reason, only. I didn't realize there was a train until it was flying by in front of me.

I've lived 43 years longer than I otherwise would have simply because my instinct was "Something weird is happening here. I should stop and assess before proceeding."

For most of my life, I've considered myself too tentative for my own good. Most of life is best lived boldly, proceeding forward without pause. Sometimes, though, "tentative" is exactly the right mindset.

In case you can't tell, that incident left more than a small impression on me.
Better that impression than the other type of impression....

Some of the trains we run are 22K tons. They don’t slow down for anything. If the gates are down, wait. It’s very simple.

The father of a girl I dated drove for Sante Fe. He told her outright that if she ever got hit by a train and survived to not even bother coming home. His view (and I agree with it), is that there is no reason anybody should get hit by a train or drive into a train. He had been involved in 3 or 4 collisions, of which at least one was a fatality.

That’s a solid point. Fortunately I have not been involved in a fatality/suicide. People have chickened out or cleared up at the last moment for me. The one time I hit a Cadillac, the passengers had vacated the vehicle and stood to the side as I hit their fathers car that they did not have permission to be driving.

    What happens in those situations?

Do they get a fine? Do they have to pay for your damages?
