The first version of this incident that I read, not mentioned in this link, was that the child, after being placed on the ledge by her grandfather, raised her little hands up and leaned forward thinking she was going to lean against a window that was not there. Regardless, a very tragic incident. I'm pretty sure that the cruise lines will probably settle with this family at some point.

I feel horrible for them but they are in denial about accountability. It’s not all on the cruise ship. Life can be dangerous no matter how safe you think you are.

I feel sorry for the little girl and the family. But I also feel they are as much to blame as anyone. Surely being adjacent to a opening that large on a moving ship that big at sea, must have produced a wind in your face situation. There must have also been the strong smell of the ocean at that area. The grandfather was negligent in his care of the child.
If you remember, the first news stories said the grandfather was holding the child out of the window when he lost his grip and she fell.
As much as I hate to say it, this sounds like some low rent personal injury lawyer has gotten involved and is looking to make money off of a bad situation. The family also has a chance at their 15 minutes of fame and a possible influx of free money. I sure hope this is not the case, but I ain't going to hold my breath.

They were in port and the kid hit concrete.

I’m sure he feels terrible, but this looks like it was 100% grandpas fault.

    Gunz are icky.
Speaking as the father of a former two year old, little kids can do the most unexpected things. They can also disappear on you like a puff of smoke. NEVER let one out of your reach in any unknown situation.
Sounds like Grandpa just wasn’t thinking for a moment and placed the kid in the wrong spot.
Sad for the family but not really the ships fault.

This is a pain I wouldn't wish on ANYONE. As a Dad I find it pretty tough to point fingers, my kids have done some things (especially my youngest who is most like me) that I genuinely feel thankful they're still in perfect shape. All of us have earned our scars through our years, but we've lived to tell those proud tales. In this story one mistake ended with the worst possible story to tell.

My wife and I took a cruise on that same ship over Christmas/NY holiday. We know the exact spot where the accident took place. From what we know about that part of the ship and the various news reports - The Grandfather was an idiot to lift the child up like he did. It was not necessary because there are glass panels below the rail he put the child on where she could have safely stood on the deck and looked through to smack the glass like he said she wanted to do. Lifting her up and not realising there was an open window simply does not fly. Not all the upper glass panels open those either side of the opening would look quite different to the open one (no tint no dirt). Sorry to say that in this case the Darwin award produced a secondary casualty.

Blame is on the grandfather. I feel bad for the parents and grandpa but feel either their pain is misdirected or they are looking for a payout. I am sure the ship will probably offer some type of settlement to avoid court. Even when you do no wrong, you still end up paying.
