Received this at work on Lackland, and was told I could share it. I am not directly involved in this, so please reach out to the POC listed at the bottom of this post for questions, more information, etc...

    Happy International STEM Day,

I'd like you to please share this information with educators, counselors, administrators, students, and families who can connect us with high school juniors to apply to a FREE 6-week summer experience at MIT starting in June 2024. We've been approached by a Defense STEM Education Consortium partner who can cover the application fee and airfare for high school juniors applying from San Antonio, Texas. Room, board & meals are already covered by MIT and DoD STEM. This is an incredible opportunity that we cannot afford to miss out on.

I'll be leading efforts to recruit high school juniors from our region, so please help me get the word out to as many high school juniors as possible. Attached is a flyer and one-pager. Below are more details, including the important application deadline of December 13th. I'll be leading an information session/application workshop on November 29th from 5-6 pm via Zoom (details are below). Please let me know if you have any questions.

Calling all juniors in high school - spend 6 weeks at MIT this summer! All expenses paid!

Apply to the Research Science Institute by December 13th (10:59 pm).

    Who should join?

Any 11th grader who is interested in STEM degrees and careers should highly consider attending this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. What other program will pay for your airfare, room and board, and food for you to spend 6-weeks with other incoming seniors from around the world at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts?

    What are the benefits?

    • A paid, 6-week travel experience to the Boston area (northeast U.S.A).
      • Free roundtrip airfare to and from Boston.
      • Stay in a university dorm for free at the MIT campus, learning what campus life will be like away from home.
      • Free meals on campus. (All off-campus food is at the student’s expense).
    • Build friendships with students your age from around the world and build relationships with potential mentors and researchers from around the world, including prestigious universities, scholars, and current MIT students.
    • Network not only with the counselors and staff at the institute, but you’ll also get an opportunity to meet with other college officials from Princeton, Yale, Harvard, and other top-tier schools and researchers who want to personally invite you to apply to their programs. This RSI experience will set you apart from other college applicants!
    • Rigorous academic curriculum that can support your senior year & early college experiences and fun field trips in and around Boston.

    Hot Links to Explore:

    • Application Link - when creating your SlideRoom account, use a personal email and not your school email.

    • Student Vlog from their experience (2018)

What is needed for the application?

    • The $65 application fee is waived for juniors from San Antonio, TX. Just make sure to mark “Alamo STEM Hub” in your application when it asks you how you found out about this opportunity.
    • Responses to short-essay questions that include: (1) What are your goals in STEM?; (2) Choose 2 research fields in STEM you are most interested in and explain why; (3) What are your long-range goals?; (4) What activities/hobbies demonstrate your creativity and uniqueness?; (5) Describe your participation in extracurriculars and outreach; and (6) what previous academic/research experiences have you had so far?
    • Recommendation letters from your math and science teachers (2 letters is the minimum). These same letters can be used for college applications. Here are some tips.
    • Unofficial transcript - submitted by your parent, counselor, or school official. (An official transcript is preferred, but they will accept an unofficial transcript).
    • Nationwide standardized test scores, if you have any. This includes the PSAT, SAT, ACT, and AP exams. If you don’t have any yet, don’t let that stop you from applying.
