I'm considering visiting Conroe Shooting Center at 11400 FM 2854. I found one positive Yelp review and more than a dozen wildly disparate reviews on Google.

Does anyone on TGT have experience with the place and what can you tell us about it?

    TIA,

    Ben

You can do better Ben, easily. It's been 3-4 years since my 1st and only visit and the only detail I recall is being told *no rapid fire* which of course came AFTER I shot @ 1rd/ 2 seconds.

On the same property is Gun Emporium. While I haven't bought anything there, my experience dealing with them has always been positive. On the phone or in person, I can't complain.

I sorta figured. Two trainers that I highly respect have made that range their base of operations. (I got the impression that their relationship with the range they formerly used was a bit strained but I didn't realize until just recently that they'd pulled up stakes and left.) When they're in charge of the range during classes, I assume there will be no problem with an RSO being a jerk, something I've seen discussed more than once. How are the physical facilities?

Yeah, I know Steve. He taught my NRA Pistol Instructor course and I've RSO'd for Donna during one of her youth groups. I like 'em both and was just wondering about the facility they're now using.

As long as my wife doesn't pull the pro card I'll be shooting some 3gun with Steve Sunday. I'll give you a range report

Last time I was at Thunder and they redid the berms. It was a horrible job bc I think they last 10' in depth and width

They are both redicuously crowded Fri-Sun. When I went CSC had much better facilities then Thunder, and I was gently warned once about rapid fire.

Ben I don't know how much my report is going to help you. For Steve's 3 gun match we had the place to ourselves. The place is small compared to other places. It goes out to 200 yards if I remember correctly. I didn't get to look at the shotgun area but maybe next month I may do a round of sporting clays with Steve. The owners were super nice to us

I used to shoot some benchrest out there. Facilities are basic firing line with booths lined up along the line. Each booth has access to 25, 50, and 100 yd targets. They will put stands up close for pistol shooters. If I recall, they required everyone shoot sitting down or inside their confined booth. Price was per gun, which is why I usually went out there when I wanted to shoot benchrest. Not terrible.

That sorta tells me what I need to know. Specifically, if Steve is having an event, he gets control of the place. It doesn't matter how screwed up the physical layout of a facility is; if you've got smart people running the show you can still have a good time.

Why does this thread have 5 stars in the list display? I've never seen that.

ETA: The stars only show when I list subscribed threads.

I almost never look at anything other than the "New Posts" search results so it took me a while to figure out what you're talking about. Sure enough, if you drill down through the forum structure, this is a 5-star thread, as shown in the forum view:

    5stars_zpsc8184ddc.jpg

    The explanation is:

    What are ratings?

The forums allow you to rate threads between 1 star (terrible) and 5 stars (excellent). Once enough votes are cast for a thread, stars will appear next to its name in the listings. These show the average vote, and can be an easy way to see which threads are worth reading if you are on a busy forum.
On the forum viewing page you can also arrange threads by rating, with either the highest or lowest at the top.
It therefore makes sense to rate threads because it helps all users. To do this, click on the 'rate thread' link at the top of the thread viewing page. Choose the number of stars you feel best represents the quality of the thread. You may or may not be able to change your choice of rating at a later date.

That text is on this FAQ page: General Forum Usage

Ratings get assigned via the dropdown menu at the top of every thread:

Apparently, some people liked the thread. I didn't vote and didn't even know the feature was available until you asked the question.

    Interesting.

Just out of curiosity, I tried to see if a single vote could change the rating of a thread so I used the dropdown menu to rate this thread "Terrible".

I know I have not previously rated the thread.

    This was the result:

    rate_zps52f23736.jpg

Apparently, the system assumes that if you start a thread, you must love it. It won't let me down-vote my own thread.

Glockster, I'm going to start a thread in the test forum to play with this feature. I'll be back in a minute.
