PUMA 92 delima

Hi all,

Need some advice.

I have always wanted a 92 style lever rifle, set up a certain way and see that Puma fits the bill...sort of.

I like the 16" bbl, but also wanted the Large Loop. Plus, I would like to have the 92/SSA combo that shoots the same round.

As far as any info I can find, Puma has one that fits the bill in 45Colt, but not in 44MAG. They do have the44mag 16" bbl version, but no large loop.

So my question is: Should I get the 16" BBL 44Mag version and find someone who can put the Large loop on it. Or get the 45Colt version and call it good

When considering the 2 gun thing I am looking at, the 45Colt has alot more options as far as SSA type pistols goes, and from doing a search, seems like it's almost a toss up between the two calibers.

I would "like" the option to be able to hunt with the rifle, but isn't a necessity, so please take that into consideration.

You may also want to consider that they offer it in .454 Casull, which is much more powerful than .44mag or .45LC. The nice thing about the .454 Casull is you can also shoot .45LC. If you get the .45LC, you can NOT shoot .454 Casull with it. The Casull is an excellent hunting round with plenty of power and also will allow you to plink with .45LC.

Not to make it any more difficult for you, but I thought you should be aware of that.

Thank you for the reply. Never thought about the 454 Casull. Guess I should have done a little more research.

I wonder how the 454 would work with the 16"BBL. The Puma probably only comes with the 20"(+) bbl, so if I did go the 454 Casull route, I would have to go with Barrel and Lever mods. Might be worth it though. I'll do some research on the 454.

If you want the 44, get it than go Here and get a lever. Putting the new lever in is a 5 minute job and if you can strip the rifle for cleaning you can do it yourself.

That info helps alot in the decision making process.

Still reading on the 44MAG vs 45 Colt issue to see which way to lean. Lots of info on that subject, but now that you have provided a "solution" if I go the 44Mag route, I feel alot better about getting the features I want without a lot of extra cash out.

The Casull is available from Puma in 16" blued or stainless barrel. They had them in stock at Buds a few weeks back, they are out of stock right now (but still have it listed in the 16"). Which means you would only need to change out your lever, as you are already considering.

Davidson's has the one your link shows (45 LC) and the 44 MAG (both with 16" bbl) within $4.00 of each other.

Now comes the tough part....which one?????????

Maybe I need to ask a question that might settle it. Can you legally hunt game (deer/Hogs etc) in Texas with the 45 LC? If not, that will probably be the decision maker.

Other than the 'John Wayne' aesthetic appeal, I don't think you will find the large-loop lever to be very practical, but it is a (relatively) inexpensive aftermarket add-on.

Just today I saw a new in box Rossi mod 92 in .44 mag with 16" barrel go for $400 on Gunbroker (but that doesn't include shipping and transfer fees).

Heck, get both. Life is short.

Sounds like a good way to solve the problem

As for the big loop, I have the first issue of the 94 Wrangler in 32 spl. I like it, but it's not a 92.

I still have a couple weeks before I get back to Texas from Italy, so I'll keep looking at all the info I can find and using the feedback everyone has been providing me here and make my decision then.
