I obtained my first CHL license in mid 90's. I let it expire and took renewal in 2004(?) - it expired 2/2008. I think the last time (2004) I had to start as a new CHL because my original license had expired more than 2 years ago. (Though, my memory may not be wholly accurate due to how long ago that was.)

I am wanting to renew now and not sure if I can take the renewal class or have to start over. From reading GC411.185, I don't see anything about a time limit one has to renew.

So, do you think I can take the renewal or start over?
I sent an email today to obtain my PIN number. Though one issue may be that I have moved since my license expired in 2/2008 and the DPS doesn't have my new address (for CHL - DL is OK).

To answer my own post... I reread 411.185 and it looks there is a time limit of 6 months from date of expiration. Then again, the way it is worded, does it only mean you have to take the class within 6 months prior to the date of renewal application (and not the date I should have renewed)?

If your license expired in Feb of '08, you now have to repeat the initial class.

Once you expire, you have 1 year before you have to repeat the intial class.

Thanks, that's what I get for procrastinating. There have been several legislative sessions since my last class, so I might learn something new.

Yeah, browse around the forum here, you will find tons of useful information.

To make you feel worse, had you not let your license expire twice, but renewed it, on your third renewal all you need to do is submit all of the paperwork, no class required. Then you only need a class every other renewal.
