If our president really wanted to jump start the economy, he would tell his adoring crowds to buy American. I think that's how we got into this economic mess in the first place. I don't like the idea of my grandchildren buying some one a honda (cash for clunkers). If the bamster encouraged the country to buy American t-shirts, tennis shoes, cars, canopeners etc, etc, there could be an awakening of our manufacturing base. I don't think our country can survive if we don't make our own tools for survival. Our previous president could have done the same thing. obama (with his rock star status) could probably have more of an effect on our younger people. Thanks forum for letting me spiel.

A consumer based society will not survive however a manufacturing based society will have a middle class and therefore a free society, yep, we are going in the wrong direction but I see no one in our present government who will make the hard decisions.:(

You'd be amazed to know that many "foreign" vehicles are built in the United States. Not only that, but many US manufacturers are exporting their manufacturing and part makers to China, Mexico, etc.

If you want American manufacturing to return to what it was, you have to remove the unions, or get the unions to work more with manufacturers to allow them to be competitive. The American consumer just cares about price point, and American manufacturers can't compete with the Chinese when it comes to that. The peaches I ate in the hospital were grown in Greece, China, and the United States, shipped to Malaysia for packaging, and then shipped to the US for warehousing, then to me. Think about how screwed up the US system is when it's more cost effective to ship them all over the damn world than process an American peach for the American market in America.

You've nailed it, we need to cut out the greed factor or die, capitalism is the only system for freedom but it must have a moral society to function correct and for years now we have had out of control greed on all sides and that is why we are moving in the direction of socialism in my opinion. Americans can build the best products hands down I've seen it and I want to buy coffee pots, toasters, etc made in America even if I need to pay more, WalMart can bite a big one as far as I'm concerned.;)

I've said it for years - "Unions have done their good deeds from the day they started right up till 1950's when there enough laws on the books to protect the workers"
Now there is no need for unions. What we need now is Americans that want to keep their country.

40 hour work weeks, overtime, bathroom breaks, etc., were good things. Since then, what have they done besides make themselves rich and powerful?

Along the same lines as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.

Something else that is that the US has the highest tax rate for corporations at 35%. When you can move your business to China were it's just 25% what would you do?

Unfortunately the manufacturing jobs have left the US and will not be returning. Whats needed is a reform in our education, and not the current crap that's been going on for the last 20 years. I don't know the answer, but the current course of teaching to the lowest denominator is not working.

Also we need to reform higher education. It's insane that one pretty much has to accept that they are going to start out in life with about $50k in debt just to get a degree for a chance at a decent wage someday.

I hear this often however if our government would take action on taxes manufacturing could return and I will add in years to come if they don't we will be defeated and/or fail as the Soviet Union did. I do agree with you on our schools they are a disaster.

You aren't going to last long on 1 million dollars, especially when you consider that people are going to be buying houses, cars, etc. with the majority of it.

What this country needs is a lasting reformation of the buyer : seller framework. What this country needs is a return to value and quality, and a return to morality.

No politician is going to work to increase tariffs on goods imported. They would be responsible for increasing the "cost of living" for people because we are addicted to cheap junk products from China.

China gets around it by huge subsidies, in fact, the Chinese government pays for goods to be shipped to the United States. They are doing whatever they can to keep American and European consumers in the stores. The American companies selling the goods are doing whatever they can to keep you in the stores.

I love ideas that involve taking money from the least wealthy group of people (those under 50) and giving it to the most wealthy group of people (those over 50).
