I've heard of AR-15's being stolen out of patrol cars parked at a residence. I've heard of many departments that can't afford AR's allowing officers to carry personal weapons (AR's, even saw a few AK's years ago) that they qualified with.

I think its wrong for them to force the officers to pay for an AR. 300 rifles at 1200.00 = 360,000.00. I think they could easily budget this to cover several years of adding new equipment, trying to do this all at once is a bit rediculous IMO. I also think they may be able to find the rifles for a cheaper price.

This guy is an idiot! So what if the officer takes it home at night? If I buy it you're damn right it's coming home with me. And it's not likely that the officers will be told to leave their rifles in their trunks. Like I said this NW Capt is a dumb ass. And this article is a first hand look at how our rights get trampled on every day. Look out for your neighbors like they were you favorite family member and then in return they should do the same for you. Bingo no more crime after some thug gets popped by the guy across the street for breaking into some one's car and no charges get filed. A lot of the crime could be subdued if people would look out for their neighbor and not just themselves.

"If you take it home at night, do you throw it in the back of the car? You throw it in the trunk? What if it gets stolen and somebody uses it? There are a whole number of problems that could happen," said Paul Skidmore, a member of the Public Safety Review Committee.

well, if I was going to have a gun with me every day, I guess I would like to own it. I guess they are required to buy the "approved" rifle.

This is fairly common for an officer's personal handgun, right? I'm not an LEO, but I've certainly heard of this before. I guess the issue is that a handgun is between $400-$600 (at least for LEO's) and a rifle is going to cost $1200 dollars? A bit over $23/week for a year.

I guess I'm not against the idea on principle, but if the rifle was mine, I'd want it to be mine. I'd take it home. I'd probably take care of it better.

LEO's get deep discounts on firearms already. I don't see a problem with making them buy their own guns. It's no different than a plumber, mechanic, etc. that has to buy their own tools for the job.

How many of you people have work clothes that you bought? It's part of any job. Police officers already get a work vehicle, work uniforms, etc. courtesy of the tax payers, and I don't expect them to buy the cars, that would be excessive.

Police officers get paid pretty well in major areas, $40K - 90K+. In rural areas I don't see a problem with assisting officers in buying their own guns as they don't get paid that much. Maybe a $100 - 200 voucher towards buying the guns, and a grace period where they can use a department firearm.

For what it's worth, GT's (The Cop Shop) does good pricing for LEO / Mil customers.

In the end, anyone is going to take better care of something that they themselves bought than something that is issued.

IIRC, there some Houston cops making 200k with overtime. Cause you know, it's all about safety

Guy named Alaniz got that plus traffic bribes til he got caught.

Any idea what cops get for moonlighting as security and/or traffic direction?

They already have their main duty gun (I hope) or maybe it is department issued. This isn't go buy your duty handgun, its we are going to buy your AR-15 and deduct this out of your check for 52 weeks (roughly $23 per week) I'm just not on the "We are ordering and you must pay for it."

If it were me, I'd love to have the option, GT's has good prices on some AR's but you start adding optics and what not and the price starts to climb, but still reasonable.

The article does not say what brand and options they are looking at for the officers.

I know alot of departments (HPD is one) will only allow certain brands and models, and you have to buy your own. IIRC HPD allows Bushmaster and Colt, plain jane M4, no optic VFG or lights......

Highcap, it's GT's. or as Texas1911 put it "the cop shop" going to stop by there after work and get a duty holster for my XD. As far as making them buy their own rifle most of the LEA's that I know for sure one way or the other furnish the rifle/shotgun or both, and the officer buys his/her own sidearm. But not all are like that. I know some will furnish it and allow officers to carry their own after qualifying with it and getting the chief or armorer to inspect and clear it for use, but my knowledge is limited to departments that my family members work for.
