Guys, so I finally moved to Dallas ( fairview) area the past monday!
So I took a short drive to some gun store on K Ave in Plano.
I was shocked to see the ammo prices!!!!!!!!!!!

Wolf 20 rnds 9.75/box of 20 for both .223 & 7.62, Blazer CCI .40 31.XX for a box of 50. Are ammo prices in TX that high? I thought the prices would actually be cheaper here than in CA. Checked out some plastic mags. Thermold was 25.00 plus tax for the AK & magpul was about 24 or so.

I can always order via online but these prices seem ridiculous. Where do you guys buy ammo from other than walmart for plinking?

Gun shops for the most part have always been more expensive than big box discount stores like Wally World and Academy. And they have been the slowest to return to the pre Obama pricing. WW and Acadamey are still higher than they were pre Obama though.

I check the discount stores and will buy there if they have what I want at the right price. Of course that is not always the case. Ammo at gun shows has finally returned to reasonable pricing. I picked up a couple of boxes of .45 Blazer at the last show for $18 box/50, and saw 9mm going for around $10. Not world beater pricing, but not so bad considereing it was double or triple that a few months ago.

Word of advice I got from an old timer... Never buy ammo at a gun store or shooting range unless youre absolutely desperate or rich. Wally World and Academy seem to be the only ones that I can buy range ammo for cheap... Just if I can find it at these two, then I would be AOK.

Welcome to the forum. My mother in-law lives in Heritage Ranch and we're just down the street.

Besides Walmart, it's Academy, Sports Authority, and online.

I assume you were at the Bullet Trap? I've always thought their ammo prices (along with most other stuff) were high. They are a good shop, as they keep a nice inventory of guns and have always been friendly......but they charge a premium price.

I like Academy - they have value packs of Remington 9mm for about 25-30 bucks quite often and their .38/.357 aren't bad either, though I can't remember what I paid last time I bought ammo. Gander Mountain in Sherman is usually okay as well, but we have family up there that gets it for us...it's a bit of a drive from Fairview/McKinney.
If you want to go to a range, Target Master in Dallas/Garland area is very good and usually have reasonable ammo prices. The owner likes to sell only to people who actually use the range if he's in short supply - just a warning. They're really nice there though, and offer their own reloaded ammo for a decent price.

Guys So I drove to CTD! My GPS couldnt exactly find the place so I had to ask around! There ammo prices were almost the same as every retail place I went to in Plano! It turns out that over at CTD, you can get Aany item from teh catalog pickup desk & usually at online prices They had wolf 223 under 5 / box!
Ionly bought 2 plastic mags for 30 plus tax though! It is about 50 minutes from me but I liked the prices & got to see new places!

Thanks for the great input thus far & thanks for the warm & rainy welcome!!!

Actually my local gun store in Plano (Bullet Trap) had .40 cal JHP for cheaper that Academy Sports, although their FMJ is higher. Go figure.

Local Wally World has .40 cal Federal FMJ at $12.50/box of 50. I've bought 250 pack of Remington at Academy for $80

Should clarify on the CTD catalog desk... They have items from the catalog with part numbers that begin with a letter. If the part number is all numeric, that's stocked out of a different warehouse in another state back east. I think they said South Carolina. Just FYI...

Went in with a mixed list of part numbers on the back of an envelope, and the guy took one look and said, "We have all but three of those." I was amazed that the guy had memorized all the part numbers in the catalog and their current stocking status. Then he told me the secret I just recounted above.

What caliber ammo are you looking for? I've seen .40 SW in stock for quite a while now in couple of wally worlds in Plano and Garland.

Thanks guys for all the info! I ve been offline for some time as getting things set up & the long commute to work ( temporarily) I just did not have time to pursue my fav. hobby!

I went to walmart in McKinney & bought .40 call range ammo by Federal. never knew they made range ammo.
I drove to CTD but they were all out of 7.63x39 ammo............I am not sure if I can call them at the retail store & get transfered to the catalog desk but I guesss I ll try my luck again.

Also saw an online ad for 7.62x39 @ Academy for 5.69/box
    MONARCH 7.62 MM X 39 MM AMMO

Anyone used it? It is steel core though. I think someone had mentioned it is made in Serbia & runs better than Wolf and is much closer to Milspec.

    2 quick question:
What is that range somewhere south of Dallas that has the annual membership of 250 or so?
are there any retail locations selling Tapco items for AR? ( I wanted to try their new AR Handguards)

Finally...................... getting my EOTech 552 next week!

    On a side note
Items I will be selling locally in Dallas eventually:
    Gripod ---great condition 65.00
MOE Stock only, in FDE, Milspec never took to range.50.00

Academy has taken advantage of the ammo shortage their prices are very high their monarch brand shoots straight but is extremely dirty.Try golden tiger or wolf dont shoot bear.If you want to check out some different ammo prices try the dallas market arm shows this weekend in dallas.
You will have 4-5 large ammo vendors and they always try and cut or outdue ea other which in turn translates to better prices for you.I know I have seen 250 pack of 40 cal value pack at 79.00 ea. But i have not seen 45 cal under $19.00.I want to be honest i do have some tables their but I do think you can find some bargains as ammo is easier to get now than before but prices are still high buying in from distributers.

    Ok I got off target abit 7.62x39 wolf fmj 5.95 for 20 rnds,however 500 rnds $140.00 that is $5.60 a box of 20 $275 1000 rounds that is $5.50 a box of 20
For hollow point or softpoint expect to pay just a tad more. with that said I wont say whom I am nor dont ask just go and browse the tables and you will find those prices. Now it isnt all that much cheaper but why not try and buy from the smaller guys, just like when you go to range or help with donations to this great forum.Again wolf or golden tiger people seem to like alot.
