Yep! You can see who the real commander and chief is just by that. Obama may get the respect brought by the title but G.W got the respect that came with the title and the respect that you can only get by keeping your word to those men and women that fight and die based on the orders and decisions of the President of the United States of America. You cant get that respect from a teleprompter.

I keep this because I though it was very moving. Everyone's probably seen it, but worth another read. For some reason, I just can't see Obama received this way.

    ---------------

An Email from a Captain in Iraq

We knew there was a dinner planned with ambassador Bremer and LTG Sanchez.
There were 600 seats available and all the units in the division were tasked with
filling a few tables. Naturally, the 501st MI battalion got our table. Soldiers were
grumbling about having to sit through another dog-and-pony show, so we had to
pick soldiers to attend. I chose not to go.

But, about 1500 the G2, LTC Devan, came up to me and with a smile, asked me to
come to dinner with him, to meet him in his office at 1600 and bring a camera. I
didn’t really care about getting a picture with Sanchez or Bremer, but when the
division’s senior intelligence officer asks you to go, you go. We were seated in the
chow hall, fully decorated for thanksgiving when aaaaallllll kinds of secret service guys
    showed up.

That was my first clue, because Bremer’s been here before and his personal security
detachment is not that big. Then BG Dempsey got up to speak, and he welcomed
ambassador Bremer and LTG Sanchez. Bremer thanked us all and pulled out a piece
of paper as if to give a speech. He mentioned that the President had given him this
thanksgiving speech to give to the troops. He then paused and said that the senior
man present should be the one to give it. He then looked at Sanchez, who just
    smiled.

Bremer then said that we should probably get someone more senior to read the
speech. Then, from behind the camouflage netting, the President of the United States
came around. The mess hall actually erupted with hollering. Troops bounded to their
feet with shocked smiles and just began cheering with all their hearts. The building
actually shook. It was just unreal. I was absolutely stunned. Not only for the obvious,
but also because I was only two tables away from the podium. There he stood, less
than thirty feet away from me! The cheering went on and on and on.
Soldiers were hollering, cheering, and a lot of them were crying. There was not a dry
eye at my table. When he stepped up to the cheering, I could clearly see tears
running down his cheeks. It was the most surreal moment I’ve had in years. Not
since my wedding and Aaron being born. Here was this man, our President, came all
the way around the world, spending 17 hours on an airplane and landing in the most
dangerous airport in the world, where a plane was shot out of the sky not six days
    before.

Just to spend two hours with his troops. Only to get on a plane and spend another
17 hours flying back. It was a great moment, and I will never forget it. He delivered
his speech, which we all loved, when he looked right at me and held his eyes on me.
Then he stepped down and was just mobbed by the soldiers. He slowly worked his
way all the way around the chow hall and shook every last hand extended. Every
soldier who wanted a photo with the President got one. I made my way through the
line, got dinner, then wolfed it down as he was still working the room.

You could tell he was really enjoying himself. It wasn’t just a photo opportunity. This
man was actually enjoying himself! He worked his way over the course of about
90 minutes towards my side of the room. Meanwhile, I took the opportunity to shake
a few hands. I got a picture with Ambassador Bremer, Talabani (acting Iraqi
president) and Achmed Chalabi (another member of the ruling council) and
Condaleeza Rice, who was there with him.

I felt like I was drunk. He was getting closer to my table so I went back over to my
seat. As he passed and posed for photos, he looked my in the eye and “How you
doin’, captain.” I smiled and said “God bless you, sir.” To which he responded “I’m
proud of what you do, captain.” Then moved on.

Yeah, right "Mission Accomplished", huh. Well, here we are 8 years later, and probably close to a trillion dollars down the toilet....; nothing accomplished, except about 5000 dead American soldiers and more hatred than ever against the U.S. The only reason I feel safer is I got a .40 cal and a carry license; no thanks to GW.

It's easy to be a critic when it's only one side in hindsight. Who knows how many lives, dollars, and events would have passed if we didn't deploy.

Iraq and Afghanistan were set forth to disrupt the extremists and offer them a closer alternative to kill Americans. Rather than killing unarmed and unaware civilians they instead would have to fight against a very aware and very capable fighting unit.

Funny how every year of the war in Iraq there was another conspiracy theory about why we went to war. It changed like the wind, but I can tell you one thing with absolute fact ...

We've not had another 9/11 to add to our calenders since we sent the war over there. That, is Mission Accomplished, and that is why our troops haven't died for "nothing".

I agree totally there is only a couple of things that bother me about the war.
    1. people who say there were never any WMD's there were Sadam used nerve gas on the Kurds thats a fact and that doesn't count what the Reagan Administration sould Iraq. just cause they haven't been found mean that they aren't in Pakistan or Iran hiding out.
    2. The fact that our soldiers are dying becouse we are fighting by UN standards when the sorry bastards we are fighting are sneaky as hell. This war would be over real fast if our guys were turned loose and let them fight back the way they are getting fought.

Your analysis is right on. I'm not saying we should not be in Afghanistan, but we should be really trying to win that war. The death toll continues at a pace higher than Iraq. Where the F is Cindy Sheehan with her outrage? Why isn't she camped out protesting?

It was Governer Bush that signed the bill that allows you to carry. That is just as well thought out as the rest of your post.

TBH, someone had to get their ass kicked. Iraq and Afghanistan fit the bill.

Heard an interesting stat on tv the other night, if I get bored enough, I'll google it. 6,000 Americans are killed and 500,000 hurt every year due to cell phone/texting distraction. Untold amounts of money.

    Something to think about...

Includeing me. I have at least four friends that have been to either theater and not one of them has said it's a waste of our money, they are all of the mind that we need to finish and that they could if the politicians would untie the hands of our military and let them do there jobs. And one of my friends is pissed because he is injured and can't go back. Our military is a VOLENTIER program, these guys and gals knew damn good and well what they were getting into when they joined up perhaps now that Obama has taken over we might all be saved from the never ending hatred of America from every country in the world. The people that oppose this war are the ones who generally don't know what the hell they are talking about. I'll stop now before I get myself banned.

I am not a huge GW fan, mostly related to domestic issues. Protecting our asses from terrorist post 9/11 he gets high marks from me.

I would like to share a story about the man.
I don't live to far from Crawford and have a few friends down there. One night a friend of mine who lives close to the Bush ranch was eating dinner in the local/only diner (sorry the exact name escapes me right now). He sees SS agents come in and look around, the followed by Pres.Bush & the Mrs. They see my buddy and his wife eating and ask to sit with them. They say "Of course" and long story short talk about clearing land, cattle prices, local events,etc....
His point was, if you didn't know you were eating dinner with a former president, you would have thought it was just one of the local ranchers you were visiting with. He and Mrs. Bush were very polite, inquisitive, and down to earth.
It was an experience that will last a lifetime.

While Bush was Governor he attended a Ft. Worth church service for church members that had been shot and killed while in church by some nut case. I probably should have looked it up, since I don't remember all the details of the shooting. Gov. Bush and Laura sat respectfully in the audience declining to take the opportunity to hog the microphone, bite their lips and feel their pain like Clinton or make a long flowery speech like BHO would do. They were there just to pay their respects.
Much of the Bush bashing and contrived hate came from well orchestrated attacks from the left wing media as directed by the DNC. What's sad is when people that claim to be on the right join in on the Bush bashing. It's like the "in thing" to do. I don't hero worship any man but I do think Bush was the right man, in the right place, at the right time. Unfortunately, the opposite is true with Mr Hope & Change!

I have heard at least 15 different State Troopers with similar thoughts on GW. I have met Guys that were on his protective detail when he would visit Texas Again after he was POTUS. One of them comes to mind right now. He had just flown into Texas (I Think) and the movie Black Hawk Down had just hit video and he wanted to see it so some one went and got a copy for him or he ordered it on Pay pert view or something. Well when the movie was over he went out and talked to his guards that were all military men, and said "I promise you I will not let anyone do that to our troops as long as I'm president of the the United States". Tell me you'd get that kind of respect from our current POTUS.

    A) What a commander-in-chief should say and mean.

    B) From our current POTUS? He might say it, but I doubt there would be any substance to it.
