Howdy y'all, I need some help explaining the firearm disease to my wife. She doesn't quite understand the need for multiple firearms in multiple calibers, and I cannot quite find the words necessary to explain fully. I have a pair of Remington 700s in .270 and 7mm Rem. Mag, and am currently looking to add a Browning X-Bolt Medallion in .308 to my safe, as well as a Ruger SR-556 and a .308 AR build that I am soon to start. None of these purchases effects our finances too much, as I place the necessities before the hobby. My reasoning behind wanting a 5.56 is to get her involved in shooting, as I feel she would enjoy it.

I tried to explain the .223/5.56 as something I could just randomly go to the range and shoot for the hell of it when the moment came around and possibly setting up as a competition rifle (3 gun maybe?), but again, I can't fully explain.

    Please help me...

The only TRUE way to explain is through involvement!
She must be involved in the SHOOTING activity.
Otherwise, well you may be screwed!

Well, yes, I understand that, hence the reason for investing in a .223. I feel it's something that would be easy enough for her to shoot, but still not a .22LR. She's seen me shoot my short barrel .270, and the bruising that occurs after a 60 round sight-in and is kind of scared to even shoot it once.

Involving her is one of the reasons I want a small caliber rifle.

Seek out a female shooter at the range.
She may be able to help with some "Female" type reasoning.

I gave up long ago trying to explain that to my mom. Appearantly she thinks that "one size fits all" applies to firearms. I can't get it thru her skull that each one serves a different purpose. She also doesn't understand the need for a bug-out bag.

A 60 round sight in!:eek::eek::eek: Was there a 90 MPH cross wind? I'm just playin around. My wife asked me the other day "when are we going to shoot your rifle again?" I was shocked. And said "right now come on" she declined but really the only way I got her in is get her to go with me. Good luck.

There was a good enough cross wind the other day when I was at Dietz to ensure every round was 1 click right at the end of the day...

Bring her to a meet where there are plenty of others.... I say have someone else teach her how to shoot if she is new, pay money if you have to for a lesson. And there is nothing wrong with a .22lr to have for fun shootin either.

I've considered this, but I live in Buda and don't have the time to go out to San Antonio for a meet. I can teach her how to shoot, but I left something out. She's a yankee from Chicago. She still looks at me crazy when I say I'm going out to kill a deer or two.

Been there, experienced that until I realized that she wanted a serger (sp?) a machine that sews nice seams on the Western shirts she used to make for me. I got her a Singer Serger, I found it easier to aquire guns.

This year she has laid down the law, no more guns, so I have only bought a couple and since its legal to have a pistol in the autos, she aquired a snub nosed .38 and gave me back my .357...

She doen't say much about rifles as she was raised in harder times on venison, so there are "some" of different calibers. I sure would like to have an Uzi in the collection but I don't plan to bring it up...

I'm not going to buy all kinds of NFA weaponry, but I do plan on suppressing a couple items. I will try to take her out to Lone Star, or I will talk to A.J. at Dietz to see if I can rent a .223 or a .22LR next time I go out there, and drag her with me.

So she thinks one gun is enough? Ask her if one pair of shoes is enough... lol

Seriously, she should understand it's a hobby. Like golf, fishing, boating, model railroading, mountain climbing etc. they all require equipment, time and disposable cash. My wifes is from Chicago as well, and although she was never around guns until we met and married, she took to the idea pretty well. We didn't have a lot of cash early one, with having 5 kids, so spending on shooting was somewhat limited. But I did get her involved in skeet shooting which she likes and does pretty well at. Now she comes to all of our TGT meets, shooting mostly her .22 Buckmark.

Haha... you have wisdom beyond your years... or you've been in my boat. I've got to further speak to her tonight about this, so hopefully I'll sway her to the dark side...

By dark side I assume you mean those who enjoy "black rifle" shooting. I prefer to think that we are enlightened. I started my wife out with a Glock 22 which is a .40 cal pistol (just in case someone didn't know). Soon after I acquired a 12 ga. mossberg, Saiga Ak-47, and an AR-15. I did like some others suggested and spoke the language of women, and told her it was simply a matter of "accessorizing" when I wanted a Comp m3 with a larue mount, and that color coordination was important when selecting a FDE DD Omega Rail, magpul miad grip....and from there she learned about dressing up a rifle. She's all about the guns now. I think the timing of political climate and the ability to explain the importance of excercising second amendment rights helped as well. Have a good one and good luck with it.
