I'm about to drive to OK to an AFB. Is it legal to leave my gun in the vehicle while I am on base or do I have to leave my gun at home for the whole trip? I'm leaving as soon as I pack.

Edit: I'm leaving, so I guess I'll have to go without it. I'll ask security at the gate when I get there.

Firearms are not allowed on base. I wish I had brought it and left it in my hotel, but I didn't know whether or not I was staying the night.

I didn't have time to look up the number for the security police and some customers may not be as supportive of the second ammendment as I am. I work at a different site every day and my boss wouldn't appreciate me interjecting firearms into my job. I almost got into trouble taking my pistol onto a Federal contractor's site. It was leased from the Federal govt and on Federal property and I didn't realize it. Most of the time, I can leave my pistol in the vehicle while I work. I would only carry into a site if I didn't feel safe.(ex. downtown or South Dallas in the middle of the night) I know it's legal to carry, but my boss wouldn't appreciate upset customers and I value my job.

Military installations do not allow firearms to be transported onto the base. However, if you want to take a chance on there not being an elevated threat level, or that you won't be pulled over for their random car security sweep, be my guest and give it a shot.

When I had firearms in the truck and needed to go on base I would check them at the gate. They'd keep them there along with all ammo. The MPs recorded who, what and how much they were holding. When I was exiting base them I could stop by and pick everything up.

I wouldn't make a habit out of checking it at the gate. First, depending on which gate of the base you're entering, you could be routed to an alternate which is designated to handle the scenario. Second, the gate booth may not have a super duper secure lock box. Third, you're 'that guy' who got pulled over, asked to stand in front of the vehicle while they secure the weapon. Assuming you're carrying concealed and it is not in a case.

Anyway, its not that big of a deal if you pull up to the gate and declare. Be professional about it, don't make any sudden moves or have an attitude and you should be treated fine. I can't speak for all branches though. My experience is with Navy bases. Start throwing those serious Marinse in there or scaring those twitchy AF guys, well..good luck

Gun owners who live on base must check their firearms into the base armory for storage. They must be checked in and out.

Try entering the Federal Reserve w/a weapon.... Had to stop by their Houston facility one time, pulled up to the guard and told him I was armed. He was VERY cool about it - said they'd store it until I left.....until I handed both of 'em to him. He wasn't upset - just kinda surprised, I guess, that I had two. I asked him (he was a moonlightin' Houston PD) if HE carried b/u, and he said yeah....then grinned.
