IMO he was not a racist but a religious zealot. There can be a very fine line between the two but when you start killing in the name of God primarily then race becomes secondary.

Racism and zealotry aside, the people handling the spin and policy are way out of touch.
I can't argue that and sadly the vast majority of the media and government is out of touch. Their only concern is covering their pitiful ass's.
The truth can damage their image of being politically correct.

The fact is we all need to keep our eyes open and be aware of our surroundings. Whether you are driving a car or a shopping cart, there is no reason to be rude or aggressive. But, that doesn't mean you don't assess the situation or lie to yourself about what you see.

    The last paragraph:

And guess what? Most Americans are not stupid -- they can process that information with the clear understanding that Hasan does not represent your average Muslim or your average Muslim serving in the U.S. military. His own words as he opened fire -- "Allahu Akbar" -- and perhaps his online screeds show who he was. He acted not as a stressed-out shrink, but a violent and twisted extremist.

The fact is we all need to keep our eyes open and be aware of our surroundings.

The fact is most people are not situationally aware.
This is a learned trait now. In years past most people were situationally aware but the wild west was replaced by the world we live in now. People have placed their trust and lives in the hands of LEO's and assume no responsibility for their lack of awareness.
That's why I carry a gun it's much lighter and easier to carry than a cop.
There were many "tale -tale" signs of what this guy was thinking but many ignored these signs for fear of being labeled a racist or over reacting.
No doubt that many lives would have been spared if more people that day had been situationally aware but they were lulled into a false sense of safety due to the location of the incident.
Maybe this has a good out come in relation to people being more situationally aware even in areas that should be deemed safe.

I really like how the media is calling the pistol he used "A semi automatic pistol often used by S.W.A.T teams because it shoots armor piercing bullets" it was a FHN five seven. The bullets in those are no more "armor piercing" than any FMJ rifle or pistol bullet.

    Sensationalism my friend!
If they called it a hand gun where is the sensationalism?
Any time a gun is involved it must "scream" of unsafe and evil!

They actually are a lot less effective than a standard 9mm. The only commercial loads I know of in 5.7mm are loaded with varmint bullets. Piss-poor penetration...

I really, really doubt he used a Five-seveN.

... If someone cooked up a decent defensive round for it that wouldn't underpenetrate like what's available now and sold it at a reasonable price, I'd seriously consider buying one. They're sweet shooters. Just not real good for self-defense. Ballistically, it's pretty much identical to the .22 WMR. Yep - it's on par with a rimfire cartridge: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.22_WMR http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5.7x28mm

You know why, it is because they used wikipedia.

Well said. What kind of gun does weigh 250+ pounds? Dual .50's with 100 round ammo boxes attached?

Situationally aware? A majority of Americans walk around like they are the only people in the world with their ear buds crammed in and their music blaring. We are the land of soft targets.

Political correctness will kill us all. It killed 13 people at Ft. Hood the other day. Thank you Obama for opening our narrow minds and making us aware that it was not the man's religion that convinced him to kill a bunch of infidels. In no way can Islam so easily be misconstrued as to imply or direct its followers to kill infidels or Jews for that matter. Yeah, just don't read the Koran and that's the only way you can believe that statement.

Your eyes should always be open and your head on a swivel. But it was people being unarmed in the area that allowed the man to do the damage he did. Amazingly, the police arrived in only about 3 minutes. Thank the real God this guy was a worse shot than the Virginia Tech kid. But this guy at Ft Hood could have actually been stopped before-hand with a lot more reasons than the VTech kid. Those 13 people died so this murderer wouldn't be offended.

That's both the benefit and curse of military training: You're always on your guard and functioning on a high state of alert in public. Like the same way people talk about police seeing everything through "cop's eyes."

Political correctness will kill us all.

I visited my sister today, and she mentioned how as far back as the mid-1980s I was telling everyone that political correctness would be the death of us. It's a travesty thrust upon us by politicians.

PC was a term created by those who need it to survive. Essentially, politicians who need votes, and the mainstream media who need viewers.

I'm the new guy but I don't believe in being PC. Is the racial slur for the negro race not allowed here?
I would think it not be best for people looking in from the outside to have another reason to call us gun-toting racists. If its used in the context of a story would be one thing, but to just outright call someone the "n-word" is probably not a good idea... not a politically correctness issue

I love the way blacks are free to call each other n*ggers, but when someone else does it it's an outrage. If the word is offensive to them then they shouldn't be saying it themselves. Good analogy is if you're truly offended by someone calling your mother a whore, you certainly wouldn't be calling your mother one either. Double standard. Black cultural fail.

I will agree there is a significant double-standard, but that's just how people are these days. "Do as I say, not as I do". Political correctness just empowers that ideology.
