I found these in the desert and would like to know what they are, so I can get some for SD. Anyone got a clue ? They look to be .45 cal.

    Name that bullet...

My guess...a solid copper bullet in 45 acp from Taurus. They make 180 grain pure copper HPs. Otherwise, I could not imagine that any jacketed bullet would fully separate from its core so cleanly.

I vote for Barnes, it just looks like a solid copper to me.

maybe. Seems like there are more "star points," though.

They expanded that much because they were shot into steel.

Normally the petals expand out, but they don't expand out nearly that much and all the way past the shank. Hell, I can't even make out rifling marks on the bullet.

Thanks. I will have to get some to try out. Can you imagine getting hit with that ?

If it loses the lead core on expansion, it's not going to do nearly the damage it could. It will under-penetrate which is dangerous for you.

Those don't look like empty jackets to me, though. They look like solid copper bullets which apparently perform beautifully - being one piece of copper which is stronger than lead, weight retention is awesome.

If they'd been shot into a steel plate... that usually simply shreds the bullet, but I haven't seen anybody try it with solid copper yet. That kind of drastic expansion is often the result of shooting water. IMO if there's a chance a bullet will fragment in a person, it's going to fragment when you shoot it into a gallon jug of water.
