I know its a long shot, but does anyone have hogs they need gone around the Austin area (would travel 2 hours )? Looking on planning my next trip, and if at all possible would rather not pay to hunt them when they need to thinned out. If I do not find any private land to hunt them I will be doing a paid trip, so if the private land does not work out and you are interested in going on a paid hunt let me know. Always good to have some company.

It may be out of your travel range, but my company owns a grass farm in Stevenville area that gets covered with hogs tearing up the place for a week or two every couple of months. The manager is always looking for people to come out at night and kill them off. I went out a couple of times last year without seeing anything, but the last trip I took, you couldn’t shoot fast enough. They would scare and come right back about every half hour. It’s a big, open, flat piece of land, and I’ve only hunted it 400yds+, but I don’t see why you couldn’t hunt prone or setup a ground blind for some closer shots. The place has some pretty impressive lights near the center which puts a lot of light on the field at night. I’ll check it out and see if he would be open to letting other folks hunt out there.

I know me and a friend of mine would love to keep you some company on a hunt. I'd have to ask my wife but I would think it'd be okay with her. My buddy's in the army so he can shoot and I can shoot for a land owner to. (some land owners want you to prove you can hit your mark before they will let you you hunt so they don't get a lot wounded animals)

Apparently, we don't own that place anymore. Shows how much I keep up with business I guess…

Bummer sounds like that would of been fun.

Cool sounds like we could have a good group now we just need somewhere to go. I have contacted one guy and am waiting on a response back. Its around $100 a day, no limit and no trophy fees.

Yeah I'll give my buddy a call and ask him if he is interested.

I would'nt mind going in on a paid hunt, as long as it is reasonable, and close enough. Since I know nothing about hunting in Texas, nor hog hunting it would be good to go out with knowledgable people.

Months ago I put out a post for this very same thing. I offered to exterminate hogs and provide a 4 wheeler and all of my own equipment. Most folks are just hesitant to let some stranger out on their property. A few people with small ranches still want money to hunt on their property. I grew up shootin' and huntin' on my buddy place in South Texas(Pearsall) on several hundred acres and never had to pay for anything except corn and meals. Unforunately, it's not my place so I can't really put out any invites. Anyhow, good luck with it, if nothing else you might try the TPWD website to check for public hunts on state property.

Yeah I checked that looks like the closest you can hunt rifle with is Sam Houston National Forest. Still have to get the special license which is only $45, but that is a 4 hour drive.

I'm trying to work out some options right now. I'll keep everyone interested updated.

Sig I got a pic for you to get you amped up!

I was actually deer hunting and it was hot out and i was not seeing any movement. This pig stepped out down the road at about 200+ yards and then started walking across, I decided just to take the shot as I had a mil dot scope on my rifle so I wasn't worried about guessing the drop with a normal duplex scope.

Also I am in the same situation as texmex I hunt my friends 3500 acre ranch around Pettus Tx. However the ranch is not mine and I cannot put out invite either :(. I am incredibly fortunate that I have access to the property and when it is sold is going to be a very crappy day for me.

Good googley moogley that is a good shot. Pigs don't usually offer any thing past 100. You can't hunt deer with a suppressor can you?
I'm going to try and call my friend today and see if he is down for a paid hunt.

    1. I have heard conflicting things about the suppressors ( I had a dealer tell me you could) however in the outdoor annual I swear I read that Suppressors, full auto's, and Laser devices are NOT allowed

    2. The blind is a 15 foot high blind, it was behind me in that shoot up that road. There were mesquite tree's on each side of the road and about a 15 foot gap id say. Where I am standing and facing in the pic opens up to a rather large field. I happened to be looking through my scope at some small deer at the feeder and I saw movement. I turned the scope to 15x and looked down the road and saw the pigs face on the left side of the road. He then stepped out and paused for about 10 seconds. I was going to let him go and see if he would come to the feeder. I then look at the feeder and it was caged in on all sides with about 20'x20' fence. (no way hogs or cows could get in this thing) i realized the feeder couldn't kick corn outside of this fence either. This is when I decided to take the shot because I assumed the pig was just crossing the road on the way back to his wallows.

The pig started a very slow walk across the road. I held on his shoulder, adjusted my scope 1moa up and pulled the trigger. The pic looks like he was hit in the upper back but that is just blood. The bullet went in right over his shoulder and he dropped instantly. 165grn nosler Ballistic Tip with 44.5 4895.

    3. Big that is actually not the same road. I said above how fortunate I am to have access to my friends ranch but there are miles of roads out there. I am not sure how many miles squared 3500 acres are.. But it seems like it is at least a few.. ?

Next trip we are going bait the same spot we had the target at for long range. I know my drop at that range with the .308 and the wind has to be pretty bad to really move it. I also have a night vision scope attachment that goes on the nightforce so we are going to go to work on them from far enough back that if we are on we can probably take a few.
