I am looking for an area to legally go shooting. I live in south austin and I am new to texas (came from southern california). I dont mind driving to get to an area, but just dont want to go to a range. Any help would be greatly appreciated. By the way I love this state and its gun laws!

well you may not love this part....

Im in NW San Antonio and can't find anywere to just go shoot.

I am here recently from Socal (Santa Clarita) got here about 3 months ago. Ive asked this same question with no answers... seems like everything here is privately owned.

In CA we had BLM to shoot at, i used to go up to the high desert and shoot how i wanted, when i wanted, what i wanted.... I miss that. I can't find such a place here in San Antonio.

Unlike most western states, almost all land in Texas is privatly owned. City dwellers have to shoot at privatly owned ranges or pay for a hunting lease.

I don't know what is near south Austin. You may have to drive to Dietz Gun Shop on hwy 46 west of New Braunfels. It is open Tuesday-Sunday (the rifle range is closed some weekends for matches).

damn it! I was hoping to hear some better news. I was kinda worried about all the private land here. I'm from temecula and we would go to ocotillo and superstition to go shooting and like you said what we wanted and when. Gonna call the local sheriff and see what they say. If i find out anything i'll post it here for ya.

I cant wait to start stocking up on guns but havent had any time off work since i've been here to get my texas drivers license, but at least i'm working thats why i'm here anyway no more jobs in cali.

Not a bad idea to ask the Sheriff. I know back in the 70's there was a place north of Dallas on the Trinity River we went to shoot and there usually a few LE shooting there too.

Report back with how the place is-
There are indoor ranges in Austin, Red's, one in Oak Hill and other in Pflugerville.
I am up in Round Rock where there is not one. For real long range there is Tiger Valley near Waco-
