"Two forms of identification, please."

So today I rented a carpet cleaner at the grocery store, and while I was filling out the rental form I was asked for two forms of ID. I showed her my DL and my CHL, and her eyes got kinda big when she realized what the other license was.

They got the machine to me pretty quick, for sure. I guess it's a side benefit of having the CHL handy.

Just this Thursday I had a Dr. appointment and the Dr. asked I strip down to my shorts. She left the room and when she came back in my gun was laying on top of my pants with my keys and wallet.
At first she did not notice it but when she did she kinda freaked out.
I showed her my CHL and she questioned be about guns. She asked why I carried into her office and I asked her what the address was (bad area) and she goes "When you put it that way - I see why"
I asked her if she would rather I leave it in the truck the next time and she stated "no, I trust you."
I suspect she has an issue with people she does not know well but that's understandable when you are somewhat liberal as she is.

I would think twice before using a CHL as a second ID anywhere except a gun store. Legally speaking, that is sort of a gray area and could be construed in the same manner as telling people you're armed, "brandishing", or whatever other term (can't think of the specific legal term) it goes by. Basically breaking concealment is what I'm getting at.

I may have to put it in a different place in my wallet then; when I open the part where my DL is, the CHL is right next to it. It was just sort of there in this case. I understand and agree with your point, but having the CHL in your possession doesn't prove you're armed. Now, waving it at someone with a "Look what I have!" attitude or an intent to intimidate would obviously be a misuse of the license.

Informing someone you have a CHL or even that you are in possession of a gun is not brandishing. At least not in all circumstances. It is brandishing if it is "calculated to alarm."

It is my opinion that it isn't the brightest thing to let everyone know you have a CHL or even own a gun, though sometimes it can't be helped.

Prior to 9/11, I would regularly use my CHL at the airport check-in when asked for an ID. Of course, I could also carry my large pocket knife onto the plane with me as well. Today, a 1" blade is forbidden but 10" metal knitting needles are allowed. Go figure.

All I'm saying is that, daily, we are surrounded by mentally and emotionally immature "adults" with the mentality of 5 yr/olds. I can easily see some of the anti gun ones seeing a CHL and responding in an obnoxiously loud manner (discretion is not in their vocabulary), "HEY, YOU MEAN YOU ARE CARRYING A GUN?!" or something to that effect, and starting the snowball rolling. You don't even have to break the law or do anything wrong for one of those immature a-holes to cause problems for you. My whole point was, the less excuses for a-holes to cause you trouble, the better.

I use my CHL as my second ID while at the bank. It usually starts a conversation about how long I"ve had mine compared to the cashier.

In all honesty, I have shown my CHL at banks, etc. and no one has ever raised an eyebrow....

It is a legal form of I.D.

I use it as a primary I.D. just to see if I can get a reaction...none so far...

And I use it when traveling out of state..nothing...I had thought it was perhaps a Texas acceptance mind set thing, but no reaction showing it in Eastern states.

For example, when using my Credit Card, sometimes I am asked for I.D. and I show my CHL. They do stare at it, but no comments...

P.S. I think I would get a big reaction if I showed it in NYC or Mass..

I can't remember the last time I was asked for a 2nd form of ID. I carry mine behind my DL so its right there. Not sure if I would use it or not as a 2nd form of ID.

My CHL is also right behind my DL. I don't prefer to show it. Normally I use the military ID as the 2nd (it use to be primary and DL was secondary).

It is not a gray area at all. The law is clear and telling someone you have a CHL or showing it to them is NOT unlawful. Nor is telling someone you are armed.

We do not have a "brandishing" law in Texas. It is a crime to display a firearm in a public place in a manner calculated to alarm.

I believe that a CHL is a form of ID, so regardless of its purpose, its still a form of ID and can be shown anytime when more than 1 form is needed.
