Right now I'm looking for a good entry-level 1911 for my CHL. Ideally, I would like to get an even trade for my Glock 22C. I'm not looking for a $1000 gun yet. I'm more in the $500 to $600 range. A Commander seems about the right size. Any suggestions?

    This is my thought.

You may either want to look for a springfield mil spec or GI. You might find one of the lightweight champion models.

Either that or go with a basic stock Colt.

You might have to put a few dollars more with it, especially for the Colt, however if you really shop around, you may find a good deal.

    Check out Gun Broker.

I have found a stock Colt, can be pretty reliable. You could get one and after awhile of getting used to it, you could decide if you want to do something to it or look for something else.

+1 on a Springfield milspec but I don't know if they make it in the comander size. If you want to entertain an alternative you can get a Springfield XD45 in that price range and it is a good concealable and highly regarded. I may be wrong but I think most of the shorty 1911s are fairly pricey. Used may be a very viable option.

I just wish Springfield made a Commander-size Mil Spec. That would be the perfect choice IMO. I don't mind buying used. I plan on having a full custom done later. Right now I just want something I can shoot and carry easily.

If you decide a full size 1911 will fit your needs, I've got a Springfield loaded I might part with.

Don't forget to set aside at least 100 bucks for a good holster.

I got a Comtac IWB that is great. Can conceal my glock 19 with ease. I don't think you'd have a problem concealing either the commander or the full size, in most situations.

If you have a little patience, you can pick up a used Kimber Pro Carry for around $650. You can upgrade it later with night sights, beveled mag well, etc....

I've got a RIA compact that I carry in a Crossbreed SuperTuck holster. I've seen this pistol at one of the local shows for right around $400. Pretty good gun for the money IMHO.

I was thinking of a Taurus PT1911 as my first 1911. What are people's thoughts on these? Seems good for the price. And I think it might prevent me from needlessly tinkering and screwing something up right off the bat.
