One of the selling points of the M16 was its light weight. Now they're so loaded up with junk they weight more than a real rifle.

I generally try to look very non-commital when presented with someone's decked-out Zombie Special....frankly, I wonder where the blazes they put all the batteries!;) In my mind, the fewer gadgets, the less the chance of a problem. Then again, I don't have lasers on ANY of my guns, so....

I think a HOLOsight, flip up rear sights tritium front post, and a weapon mounted light would be my "perfect" set up on a flat top AR. And I might be comfortable with a 3x scope handy but not on the rifle just in case of a longer precision zombie offensive strike. LOL!

Basically, efficiency is the key. Does it serve a purpose and does it improve my speed and economy of motion? Those are the questions I ask myself. This can still be obtained on an AR with a few attachments, and while still keeping the weight down, it just takes a little common sense.

The less crap hanging off my rifle...the less things to break, fail at the wrong time or get snagged on clothing or surroundings. Probably why I don't have an AR and like my AK and lever-actions with nothing more than good iron sights and full magazines for defense.

Keep it simple, light and easy to fix..I say. When you add crap onto a battle rifle...you take away its handiness.

Hm, As a soldier I find that havin stuff on my m4 comes in handy. Taclight for white light peq 15 for spotting acog etc etc as a civilian I'm not sure how practical having a bunch of crap on your weapon is perhaps just to look pretty. I saw earlier on the post about the 5.56 round. It's a round made to wound not to kill that's why it was used in vietnam the idea of you can take 3 soldiers out of a fight by wounding one. Also the military is looking to change our standard weapon. our aim is to kill in this war not wound :]

If I was to have a rifle or carbine as a civilian it would be for hunting or CQC (as home defence) or a SHTF rifle. That is why I would go with a simple redundant sight system as I posted above, a weapon mounted light of some sort (possibly) and maybe (and I mean a pretty big maybe) a laser. Anything else is just semantics for me personally. If I was in need of a patrol rifle for security or police applications, I would add a 3x red dot that could work with my Eotech/Bushnell HOLOsight that I would mount on the weapon. But if I need a patrol long gun it would likely be a 12 gauge pump shotgun with a 181/2"-22" barrel.

As a Marine, I wanted to KILL the enemy, not have them throw grenades or fire off magazine after magazine at me until they bled out from their wounds. Just a personal preference, I guess. But this individual http://www.theguncounter.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=1470
does an excellent job of blowing away the "designed to wound" myth.

All these guys I see at the ranges with there 25,000 dollars in attachments make me laugh! First, they will never use all the junk on that AR for what it is really designed for. Second, most of them could not use the iron sights if they had to. While I was in the Army I liked having my surefire, CCO and PAQ 4C, but I damn sure could hit a target at 300 meters with my iron sights! But, these "GEARDOS" really have no use for the junk they bolt, screw and clamp to their rifles as long as it looks cool.

What more can you throw on a rifle besides an optic, flashlight, laser, and a VFG?
