Okay so for my retirement (12-31-09) some folks who work for me got me a $300.00 Gift Certificate at the local gun store. Here's the deal......I have a couple of hundred (MAX) that I could add but really need to stay as close to 300-400 as possible. I have plenty of shotguns, rifles, and semi-auto pistols from Glocks to Kimbers. I DO NOT OWN A SINGLE REVOLVER! With that said I was looking at the Ruger LCR as a possible purchase for a nice reliable wheel gun that I could leave by the wife's recliner or throw in the truck as a spare carry. (Have CHL and Kimber Ultra CHP is always on my side.) Other thought is way out there..........Taurus Judge Public Defender. I don't care that it's only chambered for 2.5 shells........BG still won't like the results if he takes a hit from it. Any thoughts???

I'd look for a single action 45LC personally or a S&W 357 mag like my dad carried as a Sheriffs Deputy. I like his 357 mag Ruger blackhawk to. Good luck and have fun with whatever you buy.

LCR is a nice little revolver. I shot a friend's and it preformed well. That said, I recently bought a SW 642 and couldn't be happier with it. Don't think you'd go wrong with either. As for the Taurus... meh.

You got me thinking now.......the LCR is a little less expensive but I am a sucker for Stainless guns.........the 642 is and the LCR isn't. I'll let you know what I decide.

Actually the 642 is aluminum frame, which accounts for the 15 oz unloaded weight. But it does have a stainless "look" and it's rated for +P. One of the reasons I jumped on this one is that it is the old style no lock version.

I've been looking a Ruger GP 161, but I don't think that is in the catagory of carry. I was thinking more of a deer slayer/25-40 yard target practise with a cheap pistol scope, epecially since they have some rails that don't need to be drilled by a gunsmith.

Navyguy - How is the trigger pull on your 642? My SIL has one and the trigger is very stout. Do you know if the pull is any lighter on the LCR? I fired it after firing my Kahr CW-9 and noticed a huge difference.

Personally, I'd go with either the 686, or even a 66 (both are SS, of course) - either would fall well within your budget numbers, and will retain their value far better than a Ruger - nothing against 'em, but just bein' pragmatic here.....

I've got both - an' the 686 is a heavy li'l beast - even with its' 2.5" barrel - but I got it at what I considered a helluva deal (686 no dash) - $437 out the door - so it HAD to come home w/me.

Can't go wrong with the 642, had one and loved it. But you can't beat the Ruger SP and GP in .357, then it can do double duty on the ammo front. I have had great luck with Taurus revolvers also and prices are really fair on those too.

A little bit of cleaning and lube on the internals does wonders for the lock model S&W's, mine was much more pleasurable to shoot.

The Taurus Judge is overrated. The .410 fires a .40 caliber slug that weighs about 85 grains at 1100 FPS, so basically it performs like a .380, without any expansion.

The .45 LC is a good round, however.

It's a good snake / ranch gun, and that's about it. Too many people associate the ability to use a shot shell with the performance of 18" or longer barreled 12-gauge shotguns, and this simply is not the case.

We have a .410 Snake Charmer by the register and revolvers, and I always remind people that it has far more lethality, but in the same breath, that people will downtalk it's lethality in a long gun for a 150 lb. deer or 5 lb. duck at range, but somehow out of a 3" barrel it becomes a manslaugthering caliber.

I have a Ruger SP101 and really enjoy shooting it. Not quite as heavy and big as the GP100 so I would also be comfortable carrying it.

A friend of mine bought a Judge, the one with the longer barrel, and he loves it. So did his wife, she took it from him. She likes the 410 slugs because she said it had less recoil. 410 slug, or .45 long colt, either one would really ruin your day, probably the rest of your days.

The Taurus 905 had actually tweaked my interest in that I already have a lot of 9mm ammo but the money was just burning a hole in my pocket so I WENT WITH THE RUGER LCR! No pictures at this time but you all know what it looks like. Going to the range Monday after work to try it out.
