In case you haven't seen it yet, take a look at this thread I posted to the Gun Accessories forum. If you're intent on burying guns and ammo underground, I can guarantee this gentleman has the containers for you. Only catch is he doesn't ship so you'd have to travel to Nevada to get them.

6" PVC tubes glued cap on bottom, threaded clean out on top. Bury 200 ft deep in case of ground penetrating radar.

Just fyi, there is such a thing as ground penetrating radar, and it is fairly common technology. Buried in the ground really doesn't mean a thing, unless you have tons of land as in too much to search. ;) lol

ground penetrating radar does not work as well as most think it does, here where i live the ground is full of iron ore which hinders it's ability really well, tubes placed in the verticle position with 3 feet of iron ore and scattered ground debrise works just fine on 200 acers.

I once knew a guy who buried money in water-tight sealed PVC pipes, years later he dug them up .... he forgot 1 thing ........

    Condensation.

What I saw dug up you really couldn't call money any more. He had to soak the metal in acid to break it apart, the paper was partially moldy dust ...The paper money fell apart, he took pieces to the bank and got what he could for it. The copper and some metals corroded into clumps. He had a bunch of 5 gallon buckets of what used to be coins in various liquids trying to salvage them.

He should have had one PVC pipe, insulated it with non-degenerative insulation, insert into another pvc pipe, spray insulating foam around it, insert in another pipe ...etc.

I'd hate to see the rust on a firearm in a pvc pipe a few years later.

Yes condensation is the problem in an airtight space. There is a book out that tells you how to hide firearms so thieves can't find them. But the govt has a lot of technology today.

Ive wanted to bury one of the 40 foot sea cans in the ground for years. Not so much for the "end of the world" but just neat to have. Just for storage of guns though, I'd use a pelican case with a few dry packs in them. By the way, I have a pretty good Ragnar Benson book in .pdf on long term storage. I'll email it to you if you want.

Everybody RELAX ON THE GROUND PENETRATING !!!! Here on the border the GOV has been trying to use GPR to find tunnels, with NO luck. Until an informant lets us know where it is. The Illegals, Drugs, Terrorist and anything else is safe to be smuggled unless loose lips sink the ship. I recomend you do the same with your buried items. P.S. dont bury them in your back yard...choose a bit wiser.

I think it would be safe to say that if you bury something the moisture is sure to get it eventually. But if I were to bury something either in a pelican case or a PVC tube I'd invest in some of those packets that absorb moisture!

Know of one guy that recoated the guns with cosmolene (sp) wrapped them in oil paper then filled the pvc pipe with cat litter.

That is actually a pretty good article. Just one question tho. How would I go about seeing the several thousand rounds of .223 ammo? Shouldn't that be in a museum or something? LOL!

    It's a very simple process.

I will use a non scoped rifle as an example.

    Resumptions
1 - You will have time to dig it up and clean it prior to use
2 - Ground Radar (GPR) is a joke - will explain
3 - You store ammo with it
4 - You have a way to know where it is in 20 years

    Step
    1 - take it apart
2 - grease it down with cosmoline
3 - put it back together
4 - insert into mylar bag
5 - throw in some o2 absorption packs
6 - throw in some moisture absorption packs
7 - ammo in mylar bag with moisture and o2 absorption packs
8 - all items needed to clean it also gon in a mylar bag with moisture and o2 absorption packs
9 - insert all above into 6 inch PVC pipe with a cap on one end and a threaded plug on other
10 - dig deep hole (2 foot longer than the pipe)
11 - lower pipe into the hole
12 - cover with 6 inches of dirt
13 - put a piece of junk iron in hole
14 - cover with 1 foot of dirt
15 - add more pig iron
16 - fill rest of hole and compact

The pig iron will set off a metal detector and reflect the GPR
If anybody is looking they will get a hit on the iron dig a bit and go on to the next hit
when they dig up scrap iron.

GPR looks for horizintial items not verticle. However it can be configured to look sideways
If your that concearned then take a piece of 8 inch single walled stove pipe 1 foot longer than your
PVC pipe smash one end bend it over and slide it over the PVC.
If they dig they find scrap metal pipe and move on.
