    The FFL should have info on it. Some might charge a fee to look it up (as a service, especially depending on how much time it takes and how busy they are). I, for one, would do it as a courtesy for a customer of mine. Assuming the gun was bought in the last 20 years, the FFL he bought it from is required to keep the 4473 on file and therefore the serial number. If he bought it not from an FFL (or other licensed dealer), he MIGHT be able to call the seller and see if he has SN info. If he bought it out of the back of a chevy impala in a mall parking lot, well, ...
