I was thinking of buying an EOtech 512 for my AR. I currently have the vortex Strikefire II and vortex magnifier, The EOtech would be replacing these. Wasn't sure if it would be an upgrade worth the extra money and if it actually would perform better than my Vortex for field of view, if it would be a better two eye open sight. Things like this.

The 512 is criticised because the two big AA batteries are in line with the rifle. The batteries are bouncing back and forth when you shoot.

The later models have the battery crisscross to the rifle. Recoil acts on the side of the battery verses the ends.

Recoil has never been an issue with my 512 or for anyone else I know.

That said, there are disadvantages. The EoTech is slower to turn on than most other sights and the battery life is considerably shorter.

The models that use the CR123 batteries have a little longer life and are the ones where the battery sits sideways.

I got the 512 because I thought the batteries would be more common but the 123As can be found just about everywhere now for a more compact sight.

Never used a strike fire. The EoTech is fast and there is no feeling of looking through a tunnel.

It really comes down to personal preference. Lots of threads debating which is the "better" sight.

I really like my Strikefire but what you stated the tunnel thing. It feels like it cuts out a lot of sight.

I like my Eotechs, my vortex and my Holosuns. I feel like if running a magnifier I prefere the vortex or Holosun, but if I was wanting to run without the magnifier, short range then I like my Eotechs. Depends on what range I'm using. I've been using the vortex and magnifier to go hunting because the versatility for short and little longer ranges.

Only worth the money if they finally fixed the defects they were fined by the US govt for lying about. They offered full refunds for retail price + sales tax and/or shipping to all private consumers, no questions asked. They must have thought things could get even worse for them if they didn't offer to refund all those sights, maybe afraid of a class action?

Between myself & my bro we returned 5 of the things.

I sent my EOTECH 512 back to the manufacturer last December 2015 after the recall for a full refund.

Out of the box, it did not work, and customer service advised me to change the batteries. Their preferred brand was Duracell.

Not long afterwards, the optic did not light up, and sure enough the batteries had leaked.

After cleaning up the battery compartment, the sight never did stay on zero with fresh batteries in temperatures between 95 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

I am still waiting on a refund check eleven months later.

    Be well.

Didn't they also have a huge recall, or was that someone else?

That was them. Not a recall exactly but if you have one made before some date in 2014 you can return it for a full refund even if it's not exhibiting symptoms.

Mine never had an issue, still have it.

Just wish I had the model with buttons on the side instead of the back.

Are they still cutting checks for the recall? If so then yes it's worth the money to buy a used one, send it in, and use the money they give you to buy an Aimpoint.

I am a complete noob to the firearm game.

Few months back, I purchased 10 mags along 500 rounds of ammo from a local gun enthusiast and he advised me to stay away from "cheap red optics." I ask, what's cheap? He said anything $200 or less. My initial thought was... wtf, when did a $200 dollar item is considered cheap?

Anyhow, to avoid any regrets, I took his advice and jumped straight into either EOtech or Aimpoint. Was it worth it? Can't tell ya since I have not experienced any of the lower priced optics. I thoroughly enjoy my purchase however with not regrets but honestly, I would've been just as happy with the lowered price optics.

    Good luck on your decision.
