My father is a disabled vet since the 70s and only got his DV plates a few years ago. In fact he doesn't like his new Bronze Star plates bc it doesn't entitle him to free parking at places like his DV plates do.

I have DV plates with the handicap man on the old camaro.

    What I drive most frequently?

Standard plates...No DV anywhere on it. Its the stigma. I'd rather pay full price, forgo the discount. Just to hide I'm a disabled veteran.

What a world we live in, huh?

I'm never getting the plates again. I'm out. Ill remain private without the judgement.

    Yep on the latter.
Only stigma I ever noticed, which I chalked up to asshat stupidity, was upon returning in '69.

I'm sorry you feel that way. Why does the opinion of assholes matter to you, tho? **** them.

I think it might be a bit overblown, too. I've heard other veterans talk about this stigma, but I don't think it's as prevalent as you perceive it to be.

There's other reasons. But yeah, you're treated differently.

It's nothing new. My father served in WW2 and Korea. Mom knew he served. He never spoke about it. Besides one time. Describing having a remington shotgun next to him on the bulldozer.

He had been a combat engineer.

I only knew of one picture of him in uniform. He was a hard core E6.

He never stepped a foot in a VA. Or VFW. No army buddies. He kept his experience to himself. Sometimes, Somethings are better left alone. Things that can be asked about but can't be explained. It's like describing the transparency between ghost to ghost.

Here in Killeen, the stigma is rare. Everybody(most) here is military or related to military. Then there's this deal. If you no longer drive on base. You better pull the military stickers off your windshield.

That one I can't really explain.

You really feel the stigma at the VA in Temple. It can be so thick. You can chew like gum.

So, I've got this uncle, a bigger loser you have never seen. Hes in his late 60s age wise i think and was in the Army in the early 70s for 2 and 1/2 years and never left the states. His mother, my grandmother, somehow had him kept states side because he was the youngest son or something like that.
anyway, its a known fact, he never left the states, my mother, his older sister knows that.

he got out and moved back in with his parents, moved out for awhile, married another loser, managed to produce 2 more losers and got divorced and moved back in with my grandparents and never did anything other than drink and lay around doing an odd job now and then.
He managed to get a disabilty for being an alcholic and has basically ever held a job in 35 years

Now the SOB is running around wearing a Viet Nam Vet hat and telling everyone he is a combat veteran
He managed to get a service connected disability and that is not too hard to do, I;m sure he has a 214
But I guaran damn tee it says nothing about any deployements anwhere other than Ft Benning GA

some guy on facebook posted how he got to change the tire of a disabled vet and what an honor it was to listen to his stories and that this guy is a "true hero" for his service. My sister sent it to me and it makes me want to puke

My mom knows he is a liar and she wants him to stop telling everyone he was in Viet Nam, she says it dishonors everyone who went there and I agree

so his sister, (my mom) and me and my sister are about to drop a dime on him....
not sure how to go about it

I understand your frustration andaand appreciate your taking the time to expose him. Idk if you remember seeing a viral video of a dude in Philadelphia at the mall on black fridaty a few years ago that called out some fat piece of $***, yelled at him and all that jazz. that was my bro went to basic with him, same unit, Same platoon the whole time we were in from basic to Afghanistan til we ets'd. If you haven't you should watch it his name's Ryan Berk. Anyway my point is that this happens every day. Especially my generation of vets. It's not like it used to be in nam or ww1 or 2. There's very little front line fighting anymore. As a grunt I had the opportunity to take the fight to the enemy and a lot of my Bros were killed, dozens and dozens of enemy Kia etc. And it's super frustrating and offensive when people make this stuff up. Fact of the matter is this, only roughly 1% of the overall fighting force is combat arms (infantry, medics, socom guys, fisters, artillery <DEBATABLE} etc) .And the other 99% in one way or another, whether they want to admit it or not, whether they're in an infantry btn or not, is there to support the infantry .the fight is still won in the front. And infantry leads the way. But somehow, when we come home, 100% of the people that I meet have PTSD, and 90% of them have stories about how they're some bad ass killer. If I'm referring to anyone of you do yourself a favor and when you know you're talking to someone that really went and did it, don't feed us a line of bs . Noone that knows what they're talking about believes a word of it and if you run into someone like me that's got some serious survivors guilt, I will call you out on Facebook , in public, at the store, idc where we are .And I'll do it loudly. I've done it before and I'll do it again. It's disrespectful to the ones that actually went and did it .if you want to work a VA claim so you can steal money you didn't earn from the VA every month whatever that's your purogative. But I got a lot of buddies that can't tell that story that actually went and did something for their country and it's a total insult to their legacies, their parents, wives, kids they left behind, and it makes you look like a total asshole. Rant complete. PS whats up with all the whining that goes on in these forums? Seems like the admins are more worried about correcting peoples Grammar than they are keeping the peace and that there's some bullies on here that offer up mostly snarky comments and replies to people with legit questions or concerns. Idk kinda lame. Lotta good stuff on here for sure but just curious if anyone can explain why that is or if I'm just jaded. My name is Russell btw and I'm an asshole.

We really should come up with an orientation blurb for new members but a few quick answers might help, I suppose.

Whining around here happens a lot if you want to view it that way. A lot of it is meant sarcastically. Roll with it for a while and you'll know whether to take it seriously or not. The default attitude should be "not".

Grammar corrections are actually pretty rare and almost always done in jest.

Snark is the heart and soul of the forum. Forums that stay perfectly on-topic with a serious tone are boring. If you want that sort of thing, with incredibly tight moderation, I can make a recommendation or two. However, I'd urge you to give this place some time. OTOH, after you've been here a while if you feel some particular bit of snark crosses the line over to bullying, feel free to report the post and the staff will look into it. (There's a "report" button to click for every post. It would help us if you'd cite the forum rule you feel is being violated, too.)

The nature of the forum is determined by the people and the people here get along so well, often despite what it looks like, because we make a strong effort to meet each other in real life. We have regular local meetups and a twice yearly family reunion (as we call it) somewhere close to the middle of the state. When the names on the screen are not just avatars but real people with whom you share range time, some snark and whining is, well, just the way friends talk. It also makes for a cool group of folks.

Check your local hometown forum to find out about local meetups. The family reunions are in April and October every year. Attend as many as you can if you want to get the best out of this place. Also...
...Cam has given you the best advice possible.

You are right about the percent of those that are in support units and not actual combat. I was in a Combat Support Group '62 to '66. I was never sent to Vietnam, but, I did my part and was available if and when I was told to go. Therefore, I am a veteran of the Vietnam War. Now it comes down to how a person presents himself to others. I am a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America. I don't pretend to be a combat vet, but, I did participate in the manner prescribed by my commanders.

I did my time in Iraq. I was in a support unit. 63B in an Aviation maintenance unit.

It’s true that the majority of the military is support. It’s also true that soldiers are pushed to claim something from the VA before they ETS. That said, I believe you are looking at things through a bit of a narrow lens.

Our motor pool was first from the main gate at LSA Anaconda near Ballad. Right across the road from the fuel farm. We had the interesting experience of helping transportation units patch their trucks up after driving through Iraq. These were support troops, but they were getting their share of combat and they would probably argue that the front line was wherever the IED went off.

Yes, some people like to thump their chests. Some are full a bravado. And in Iraq at least, support troops were often put in the same shit as their infantry escorts. At least during the time I was there. Although towards the end of my tour things were settling down.

I learned not to judge someone’s experience based on MOS though. Many found theirselves in different circumstances than their MOS would imply.

I served at the same time as others in the Vietnam War. I am not eligible for most VA benefits because I was never 'in country'. I can't get VA medical assistance. What difference does it make where I was for benefits? I was where the command told me to be. I was part of the war.

I was not in during war, but I was on duty when a KC-135 crashed and I was one of the first on scene and ended up assisting recovering 17 terribly burned bodies. I will not forget the smell of burnt flesh and Jet fuel ever.
I do think that there should be a distinction in the VA between vet status for claims.
If you were direct combat you should get faster processing for your claims
I have ask very little help from the VA because I really don't need it.

It would bother me if I had a big claim award and thought that some guy who lost a leg couldn't get services because of budget restraints.
