"WASHINGTON, D.C. – The American Suppressor Association (ASA) is pleased to announce the reintroduction of the Hearing Protection Act (HPA) by Rep. Jeff Duncan (SC-03) and Rep. John Carter (TX-31). This historic piece of legislation, which was originally introduced by Rep. Matt Salmon (AZ-05) in the 114th Congress, will remove suppressors from the purview of the National Firearms Act (NFA), replacing the antiquated federal transfer process with an instantaneous NICS background check. The HPA also includes a provision to refund the $200 transfer tax to applicants who purchase a suppressor after October 22, 2015, which was the original date of introduction.“The American Suppressor Association believes that citizens should not have to pay a tax to protect their hearing while exercising their Second Amendment rights,” said Knox Williams, President and Executive Director of the ASA. “We are thrilled for the opportunity to work with Representatives Duncan and Carter, who have reintroduced the Hearing Protection Act in this new Congress. Although we recognize that introducing this bill is the first step in what will be a lengthy process to change federal law, we look forward to working on the Duncan-Carter bill, alongside the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, the National Rifle Association, and the National Shooting Sports Foundation to advance and ultimately enact this common-sense legislation.”

Sounds good up until the part of refunding applicants back to 2015. Just don't see.gov, no matter who's in charge, agreeing to give back all that money.

Rep. Carter, at one point, was my rep. Good man. Highly respected. Even members of Congress refer to him as "judge".

Thanks for the reminder 35... Something I've been meaning to do for weeks... Signing up now

You are very welcome. I have followed them for a long time, but after the slanted Wash Post article on suppressors, I decided it was time to put my money behind those who are fighting the hardest to secure my rights.

Yes I think during HPA debate we'll see all kinds of ridiculous statements from the state representatives where suppressors are prohibited: assassins running wild, blood in the streets, etc. Predictable but tired refrains similar to what has occurred during the debate in many states during discussions to legalize concealed carry which just don't hold water.

Suppressors were basically added at the last minute to the NFA in 1934 due to overblown concerns about game poaching. This has led to 83 years of over-regulation to what should be considered an essential safety accessory.

I'm very hopeful these items can be de-listed from the NFA altogether this year with support from the Trump administration.

Yep. And today, a modern crossbow is quite good at taking game. While it doesn't have the range of a suppressed round out of a modern rifle, it is FAR more silent. And yet Game Wardens still manage to catch poachers using them.

Besides, if you had a machine or device that produced 140dB and you didn't attempt to muffle it using readily available technology, you'd be fined. But do that with a firearm and you're a felon.
