If you're hosting an open carry event at a private venue, and the venue owners say they're ok with the open carry...can the guests going to that event open carry without a license as long as they stay on the property?

If the private property owner says its ok, then its OK. It the same thing as when I let someone open carry on the ranch property while hunting etc...

There is a legal exception for activities such as hunting.


As of now; I'm not aware of any changes to the law that allow an unlicensed individual to carry anywhere outside of the persons property or to and from a vehicle.

An unlicensed person may open carry on a premises under their control, so if the owner of the location where the event takes place wants to give all of your guests control of the premises, they can open carry.

Handguns no, everything else yes.

UCW does not have a "property owner permission" exemption. You either make the listed exceptions or not.

Too bad the code doesn't specify what "under your control" means. Owner gives you some keys to the door, or code to the lock on the gate? Your name on the deed? Owner says you have control of this property tonight?

Interesting discussion as to the letter of the law, but here is my take in the subject:

Friends and I decide to have a BBQ at my home. Everyone, even non license holders, decide to OC because I do while at my house.

1.) In order for a LEO to even pay any attention to my home, someone would need to make a report.

2.) If someone, say a nosey neighbor, decided to call the local sheriffs office and an officer responded, do you actually think he is going to say a thing about it if I have given them permission to OC on my property?

3.) Officer X decides to get strict on the law because he doesnt like OC and says he is going to start making arrests and I tell him that everyone on the premisis has control of the property, what now?

If I were going to host an OC event on private property and the owner said it was OK for anyone (barring prohibited persons such as felons) to OC, I wouldnt worry about it. If I you are worried about it, Id ask the owner to call the local police/sheriffs office and speak with the chief or sheriff and get their opinion. I highly doubt they would have an issue with it.

He arrests them anyway, and lawyers argue in court what control of the premise means.

To toss a wrench in the mix, there will be off duty sheriffs hired to guard assets at the event, so following the letter of the law is important.

There won't be a problem with all of them being LTCers.

Potential problems arise with non-LTCers OCing even with your permission on your property.

I wouldn't do it.

Will there be drinking?

If so, no one should be carrying OC or CC.

Lol yea, people who are involved probably know what I'm talking about, but I didn't want to turn it into a debate on "shoulda woulda coulda" so I'm keeping it vague.

Attendees have been asked to put away guns before any alcohol is available. It would be in their best interest to do so with the two off duty officers on site, and no alcohol will be available until it is felt that everyone has put the guns away.
