    Kerbouchard,

You have a very valid question, and I would always recommend getting identication when you buy a firearm from someone you do not know. If the person is unwilling to identify who they are then I would be very leery of doing business with them.

That being said, I have done this very thing when I was younger and have never had any problem with any transaction except for one. I purchased a rifle from my brother in law, and it turned out to be stolen. Oh well.

As to your second question, I have never heard of any problem with a serial number being used that was posted on a board or anywhere else. I have heard and read some off the wall theories but am unaware of any situation created.

    My missing .357

    PawnCop,

Recently I realized that my snubnose S&W .357 had come up missing. The problem is since I last saw it (approx three weeks ago) I have done a bit of traveling. I've been everywhere from Austin to Fentress to San Marcos to Houston and to Galveston. The only people who had access to the gun where myself and my fiancé. The past few weeks have been rather hectic but I believed (until recently) that the gun was in my car. I drive a prius and it hasn't been broken into. Also it should be noted that I travel with a considerable amount of valuables and it would seem if anyone could have gotten into my car undetected they would have taken more than a gun that was hidden and less expensive than other guns I was traveling with. The last place I absolutely remember seeing it was in Fentress at my fiancés mothers house but it was where it should have been which was in the back of my car in my bag. My fiancé re-organized the car that afternoon but she claims not to have seen it (which she wouldn't have if she didn't look in my bag) This has been driving me up the wall since I noticed it gone and I have tripple checked every location I have been and gone through everything I own and my vehicle numerous times. I'm not the type to lose things in general and I hate to wrongfully suspect those close to me but I'd reallly like to get my gun back. I do indeed have the serial number. How should I go about reporting it not knowing exactly what city in Texas it came up missing in and is there any way to check if has been pawned on a state wide level?

Thank you in advance for any help you may provide.

    dangerbear,

I would suggest that you fill a report with the city you live in. The report is a lost/missing gun. Contact me via PM or e-mail if you have additional questions.

    Pawncop-
Super advice regarding recording your firearm info. What I have done is to create a Word document with all of the weapon info (make, model, serial, etc) and then inserted a photo of the weapon. Just to be redundant, I keep a copy on my work computer, just in case my home PC would go wandering, or crash.

    tx transplant,

I use a spreadsheet program with all the data I listed as well as date of manufacture and other information important to me.

Also keep a copy at work.

I am glad you find the information helpful.

    Return our stolen property.

We were victims of a burglary/larceny in June of 2012. Couple of young druggies entered our property and stole some items from our RV (TV & misc. small items) and autos (an IPod & .38 S&W revolver). They were caught in the act by the neighbor across the street in the midst of stealing his property. Harris Counts Sheriffs Dept. was called (by us & the neighbor), they arrived and arrested the ne'er do well couple. Due to the circumstances - that I still don't understand - none of our property could be searched for so none of it was recovered. Except for the gun. Harris County found and recovered that right away. The young duo spent a few weeks in the slammer and plead out. But our gun is still in the possession of Harris County. Numerous phone calls are met with excuses such as they have to run ballistics or finish some other detail. I think they have no intention of returning our property. My wife and I are God fearing, law abiding, tax paying citizens, who feel like they are getting the run around. Any ideas or avenues we can pursue for the return of our property?

Great site. Great topic. Need some info/advice.

Good luck with that. I have been in the same boat in '07, to this day I have not been able to retrieve my property from the PD evidence room. I fear at this point in time it is destroyed or mistreated. I have been given the run around by everyone involved.

Question ..... If you recieve compensation from an insurance policy for guns that were stolen from you but were only given partial value because of deductables or loss limits in your policy, Who would own the weapons if they where recovered? Who would the police department contact? (The original owner or the insurance company that paid for a portion of the asset).
A friend had approx 100 weapons stolen. All the serial # submitted ---the guy was caught. Insurance paid off---- none of the guns have been recovered yet.
    Thanks for your insight...Alan

I contact both. If the complainant wants the gun back then the insurance folks and the complainant can work things out.

The insurance has salvage rights when they pay the claim.

I have more issues when there are problems with insurance companies. Some are easy to work with and others are real pain.

I hope you find this helpful.

my father passed away about a year ago today. He had some gun in his possession which I believe prior to his death were sold without his permission ,, He had numerous strokes and was unable to communicate. It believed that a family member of my step-mom's sold them. i know his guns were registered . There is really only one gun in particular i am interested in . It was issued to my grandpa, his father. It was issued to my issued grandpa by the city of Goldsmith when he served as chief of police there. It was given to my dad was when grandpa passed away. It really has more sentimental value than monetary . When my aunt asked about this gun the family member about it he contacted the person sold all the gun to and said it was not among them so this person does know who sold them to. All i know at present is it was a pistol. However if these gun were registered in my dad's name. How would I go about find that information? You may contact by sending me a PM

As I understand this thread then my original 640 Centennial is no longer stolen, as the burglary was back in the early nineties. I took notice that the "is it still stolen?" letters stopped coming. Great way to clear a case load. Magical mystery guns, poof, now owned legally by a thief or his gang buddies.

That's a great business model too. Steal guns, grease em up and hide them in a box. Come back 5 years later and clean them up, off to the gun show you go, with guns the police have cleared for you. I'm old but if I were a young man I might be inclined. You could put on your cards that your guns are backed by police policy. "All my weapons have been cleared by a Police Debt." It almost worked for that range in Humble. Except they took evidence guns that someone else planned to take.
God bless America. It's clear no one else will.

Cyndi, if your father/grandfather lived in Texas, the guns were not registered. There is no gun registration in Texas. I hope you find what you're looking for.
