Entertainment for inmates? E-tablets planned for Travis jail

Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez and her staff at the jail have a new tool to inspire inmates to obey the rules and help pass the long days behind bars: They’re planning to soon begin handing out electronic tablets, similar to iPads, with an array of entertainment options.

Another way to look at this is that there are quite a few people in county lock up that can not afford bail and in fact may not be guilty of what they were arrested for( and you are assumed to be innocent until proven guilty)

I agree that convicted, incarcerated inmates should have as miserable experience as possible so as to act as a deterrent from going back, but unconvicted people who are awaiting trial should get some leeway if their behavior warrants it.

It seems keep the kids on the outside docile and ineffectual, perhaps it'll have the same effect on inmates. Who's got time for shankin' when there are Kardasshians to keep up with? :p

My cousin was falsely accused of molesting a 9 year old very troubled boy. My cousin ran a martial arts studio and he took on troubled kids, low income family kids, and worked with other handicapped children. This kid had been rejected by every non-government program because of how badly he acted out. He was a mess. When my cousin told this kid's parents that he could no longer work with the kid because of how out of control he was, the kid made an immediate outcry against him. Even though this kid had made like allegations against others in the past and then recanted, the McClennan County DA filed charges based solely on the outcry of this kid. There was zero evidence.

My cousin was arrested and charged with a felony and spent 3 months in the county jail before the kid recanted. My cousin lost his business, his wife left him, and his home was foreclosed on. Heaven forbid that innocent man have a way to pass the time while falsely incarcerated.

Also, when inmates have privileges that can be taken away, it motivates better, safer behavior.

That sucks for him but doesn't justify the purchase to me.

Plus, the inmates already had the privilege of not being in jail to motivate them and it didn't work.

I get that keeping them busy keeps them out of trouble but think it is bullshit that they are gaining perks that many law abiding citizens don't get to enjoy.

Innocent until proven guilty. Most in county lockup are awaiting trial and either can't afford bail, or are denied bail. A lot of them are actually not guilty of what they are charged with. As someone else pointed out, electronic media has done a pretty good job of pacifying the general public already.

I just provided you proof that what you said isn't true. But let's ignore that since it is contrary to your uninformed opinion. Ok

There are most certainly those in county jails that absolutely do not deserve to be there. From what I have seen, at least in the local county jail, the vast majority are right where they belong.

I thought the tablets were free to the jail, and
they get paid by charging for use?
That is how I read it.

I assume the jail will be responsible for chargers, electricity, and repairs but that may all be figured into the cost too.

Jailers will have some time dedicated to the project too.

I worked in the full size "I.D," prison units. The computer policy at that time allowed NO Internet of any kind and very restricted computer use. In our unit, instructors were permitted computer use but the printers were locked up in a cage under heavy security.

Some educational classes had computers but Offenders who had sexual offenses, were prohibited from any computer use. It may have changed, but that's the way it was.

The key here is the use of the term "Jail." They are a completely separate entity from the full size prisons. We used to refer to them as "Baby Prisons!"

Inmates plus boredom equals them concentrating on you to expel the energy. This is same discussion about if inmates should be allowed weights.

Ask any present or past correctional officer. The inmates with the self control. The inmates that causes little or no problems. Do as they'll told, no drama. Are the ones you see 'pumping iron'. They like those weights and want to continue to use them.

County jail is a little different. It's short term. About three, four years at the longest. Those inmates are new with no structure. They still get bored. Faster then state inmates. They still need an attention diversion. Otherwise, they'll start tearing shit up. Stuffing a commode. Making weapons. Doing all around stupid shit. If the TV go's out they throw a fit.

As with any privilege. It's a disciplinary tool. Taking away something as a tablet? Yeah, smart mouth ME. Don't do as you're told and it's gone.

I think it's an excellent idea.
