I've bought quite a few guns without a BOS but sometimes wonder what would happen to me if later events (trade-in, leo action) caused one of them to be examined and found to be stolen. And we all know the computers that track such things are not always correct - and can be manipulated.

Agreed, but what good would a piece of paper do for you that maybe the other person's information was bogus (without your knowledge)? Telling an investigator you bought it at a gunshow would be the truth. And you don't have to show proof you bought it at a gunshow, etc. They would have to prove you stole it. You'd lose the gun for sure, but that would happen either way.

I bought a rifle from an older customer that I trusted. Late night after work, too dark, shouln't have. Later when I got it home and got a good look at it, I called a friend in the PD. Yup, it was stolen. Turned it in and him too. No BOS. No problems.

First, I appreciate all who are trying to help in a positive way. Thank you.

All this talk about BoS or no BoS is a bit convoluted because people argue both directions and the banter is different on various forums. So for an idiot like me, it's a bit confusing. I wouldn't care at all except I don't want to give any money-grabbing land-grabbing gov't agency the tiniest excuse to steal what little I have left to leave to my son. That really is my only concern.

The point is legally selling a gun means you have no liability of its use after it has left your possession. The Texas plumber whose work truck ended up on a Syrian battlefield didn't go to jail because he legally sold it, so why would you for legally selling a firearm?!?

A bill of sale has no legal standing and could actually be used against you as TXI has pointed out. Getting excited by this matter makes no sense...police contact you about a firearm that was at one time tied to you, you tell them you no longer possess the weapon, end of story. Having a BOS wouldn't have changed a thing, and as many have said if a seller requires one, they'll walk away. You don't need my PII to sell me a gun via a private sale, if you ask nicely I may briefly show you my Tx LTC or DL but if you want to record any of that info you'll end up watching me walk away.

If you are that worried about "all your stuff," then you should do your homework about the legality of selling firearms in this state. Know the law and operate within it, and your son will have his inheritance...

I too want to alive some fears I read about in this thread. When the PD called they were in search of information. I'd never met the guy I traded with. He assured me he lived in Texas and was legal to own a firearm, so did I. We traded. The PD knows the law and never even implied that anything was wrong. I've sold a few guns and bought a few in private deals. If the other guy wants a BOS, no problem to me, as long I get a copy of everything he wants about him too. I may still have a couple lining the bottom of the safe. If there is a benefit to living in Texas, private gun sales are one of the really good ones. It's kinda sad we need to defend the right to convey private property.

I read a news story about a guy that sold the crazy cop killer in Dallas an AK-47 (not the AK-74 that was used), it was bought privately and sold privately - (B)ATF(E) called just to get the history of the gun, and that was that.
