Traded in a pickup truck once. Dealer wholesaled it and nobody bothered to do the paperwork. Three months later it was used to rob a convenience store in podunk Texas. First I heard of it was when the podunk Police showed up to ask my wife if her husband, who was on duty at his own podunk department at the time, was an armed robber on his off days. Answer No. End of problem. One good thing the truck was totaled just after the robbery. I did not weep then for the misuse of my old truck. Houston PD called some years ago and told me all the court cases were finished and did I want my .45 back. After some conversation we determined I had sold that gun in a legal private sale at a gun show a decade prior. Oh my God, the left thinks I'm a loophole. My honest streak kept me from getting the gun. It really wasn't mine at that point. Nor was I in ANY way responsible for the misuse that made that poor gun homeless.

So your ex truck and ex firearm were tied together in the same robbery?

So the police interviewed your wife and not you? That's some fine police work. Please tell me it wasn't an Ellis county sheriff.
It was a long time ago and I honestly don't remember. Somewhere in central Texas I think. The "investigator" was just filling in the blanks. Seems that the truck hit a ditch and tore out the undercarriage.
Did a sale of a car where the front clip was rusted off. I thought I was selling it for junk so I sent in the state form. It ran around Pasadena for another year racking up Toll Road charges. Those people write really nasty letters. They even put a note on my credit rating. I will use that form every time now. Funny thing, the car was not in my name. Holding it for a brother in law. The car upset the homeowners association so I junked it. I signed the papers and it was registered to my address. Hispanic guy showed up with a beaten private wrecker and paid cash. To this day I do not know what happened to the Brother in Law. He stood by my sister through a nasty cancer battle. Said he wanted some freedom and would come back for the car. Hope he is well.

The 4473 form is kept by the FFL and not "recorded" by the ATF. So, the investigating agent has to know which dealer to go to for the information from the 4473.
Not that hard for an initial sale. Call manuf. & get where they sent it > repeat until they get to the selling FFL = 4473 w/original purchasers info.
Have no idea what happens when a FFL closes the doors as ATF could retrieve the 4473?

I believe all the 4473s are sent to the ATF when a shop closes down.

Unless of course there was a fire, and some of the records were destroyed, such is the case with my Smith.

If the 4473s are less than 20 years old, they go to the ATF if an FFL closes. Older it is the FFLs choice. Even if they don't close, they can destroy any that are over 20 years old.

I have a few weapons I consider friends, they are not for sale. Nobody will accuse me of being well to do. In order to shoot all the guns I like and take them apart and admire them. Well, I have to trade one for another. Its fun to do, I meet folks. If I had to keep up with paperwork on everything that's passed through my hands I'd have to quit. Lucky for me, Texas does not require me to be an FFL. There's a few things the state expects me NOT to do. Like sell a gun to that guy in the orange jumpsuit and broken handcuffs. I must not know he cannot own a gun in Texas. And I must not know he lives in Nevada. I deal with Texans. Besides Nevada elected Harry Reid over and over, they don't deserve one of my guns. How do I know a trader is not one of the aforementioned? I ask. All friendly like. The state doesn't require this but its the least I can do. So before we ride into the sunset pardner, you aint a felon from Nevada is ya? Easy and quick. I'll show you my TDL if you show me yours, but that's only to make you happy. When I trade I want everyone happy. If you gotta see my LTC, well, up yours, I'll bet secretly you are from Nevada.

Yes, they can take my word that I sold the gun. However, I might not have an alibi if they have no other leads and pursue investigation against me because I live alone in a rural area. I have no criminal record but many crimes are committed by people with no prior convictions.

I bought the pistol new at Academy Sports and the police had record of that. BTW, I've also sold guns to individuals who I trust. I won't be doing that ever again without a signed sales receipt.
Always, always, ALWAYS use a bill of sale.

    Something like this one:
