University of Texas at Austin moving statues of four figures tied to Confederacy

The University of Texas at Austin is removing the statues of four figures tied to the Confederacy, the school's president said on Sunday, saying they had become symbols of white supremacy.

White nationalists and counterprotesters clashed this month in Charlottesville, Virginia, and one woman was killed when a suspected white nationalist crashed his car into anti-racism demonstrators.

"Last week, the horrific displays of hatred at the University of Virginia and in Charlottesville shocked and saddened the nation," school president Greg Fenves said in a statement.

"These events make it clear, now more than ever, that Confederate monuments have become symbols of modern white supremacy and neo-Nazism."

Not surprised Austin did that. Am only surprised this whole confederacy thing didn't come up during the last administration.

    Aggies did, back in '63.
Damned Texas Rangers made us give him back, though...

That's a shorter version of the story than I've heard. The part I remember was the Texas Rangers threatening the students with cattle rustling. They pointed out that stealing the other mascots could be viewed as just mischievous and an infraction of the law, but stealing cattle was still punishable by hanging, according to the law that had not been changed at that point in time. Best the kids could hope for was just a long jail sentence.

And that's how Bevo was found after being moved around. Of course I guess you'd prefer to call him 13-0 which is what the aggies branded onto him before the Texas folks came up with a way to disguise that score and turn it into Bevo.

Being there at the time (and one of those cheering Bevo around the Quad that evening) I recall one of the plans (other than BBQ), and A&M being one of the premier Engineering schools in the country, was to hoist him atop of one of the building and let the t-sips figure out how to get him down.

Typical aggie engineering. Hoist him up with a crane and a sling and let the other guys figure out how to call a crane to get him back down. They'll never think of that.

But since we're going down this road... How do you get a one armed Aggie out of a tree?

    Wave to him.

I'm no Aggie, but I'll be sure not to be climbing any trees with you around. :p

I assume the next step for our country is to force the theme park to change the name to "Five Flags over Texas" since the flag already was forced to be removed through intimidation.
