I made a pretty good deal online on Good Friday. Fountain Firearms in west Houston was on the list of FFL's. I thought why not, they are not too far away and I have been going into their store more than 20 years.

So I went in and identified myself, and he pulled out my shipment. I filled out the 4473 and went to pay him. I handed him $40.00 expecting a standard $35.00 transfer. He said no sir that will be $85.00!!

They must be associated with cheaper than dirt in their outrageous fees.
They will never see me in there again.

I agree that I should have checked the transfer fee. When you use the Gallery of Guns, Gun Genie, it says that Fountain Firearms fee is $15.00. However I did not purchase from them.

I would have been ok with anything up to $35.00 without a second thought.

I just thought everyone should be aware.

And we appreciate it. I know I do.

A gentleman came in the other day...said he went to the gun shops in Corpus and with the exception of one, said they would not do a transfer from out of state from a private individual. The one shop that said they would told him it would be $90.00.

Granted this is what he says happened. We charge $25.00 for transfers, and I know some folks think that is too high too. We did the transfer for him. I'm hearing transfers in San Antonio are $40.00 and up from some customers also. Seems transfer fees are on the rise and vary greatly from shop to shop.

Another case of unintended consequences. The government makes life tough on the little FFL's that do transfers. The big guys decide to take some of the profit out of Internet buys by ripping off the buyer on transfer fees. The buyers hopefully learn who is fair on transfers and gives them their accessory and ammo business. Let Fountain and the others die on the vine. It's all the buyers can do. As most big firearms companies and FFL's have proven, they will gouge our eyes out when it's a sellers market. That means we owe them nothing when the Trump slump makes it a buyers market. I'll drive quite a ways to do a transfer that's fair. And not feel bad about calling out the gougers online. My thanks to the OP.

Even Big Tex pawn shop here in Odessa, whom I think have inflated prices, told me they would only charge $25.

Ive never had any bad experiences with them any time I’ve gone in there, only bought one gun from them and a few years later a sling, only have had good experiences.

$85 is a high FFL transfer fee indeed, but it’s to encourage people to buy guns from them rather than online. I don’t like that idea at all, but it’s their business lol. Gander used to charge $85-$90 for FFL transfers, and people used to agree to it too.

    Helotes!
A great way to drive customers away! I understand the competition with online vendors is tough, but there is still a lot of profit to be made through accessories and ammo. However, screw over a customer by overcharging for a simple transfer and they're highly unlikely to ever set foot in that shop again!

The market is rough at the moment, and bad publicity is a killer. It is pretty stupid of them to be so myopic.
