The transfer fee section on their website is confusing as well. I can't tell if the transfer was only supposed to be $45 or if you buy a weapon from them, you save $45 off the total transfer fee.

    http://fountainfirearms.us/content.php?page=policies

Am I reading that correctly? They charge $45 to do a transfer when you buy from them???? Not in my lifetime.

I think they are saying that if you order through one of their affiliated web sites, there is no transfer fee, if you pick it up within 7 days.. It sounds to me like their standard transfer fee is $45 for other web site online purchases I don't see $85 anywhere except on the home page, where it says free FFL transfer with $85 in-store purchase.

    Quote from the page:
"Most other Gun Shops charge a "sneaky" firearm transfer fee of $45 or more, per gun, to pickup in store, when ordering from their website. Order your next firearm(s) and/or accessories with Fountain Firearms GEARFIRE/NFDN website, pickup that ordered at Fountain Firearms, within 7 days, after it arrives, and avoid a $45 Transfer Fee."

Is this the same Fountain Firearms that has moved once or twice and was originally located downtown, just a couple of blocks from the bus station?

That $85 you gave bought you $85 of merchandise in the store (ammo, magazines, etc.). Sounds like you were so surprised that you forgot to grab your stuff.

I see them at least annually to re-up on balistol.

Fountain Firearms is well within my driving distance for gun shops. It's also now off my list of shops to step foot in. I don't patronize businesses who pull this kind of crap Even through I far prefer buying in-store than online and theoretically wouldn't fall prey, this speaks to the mindset of the business owner and life has taught me better. There's a really high chance of other 'gotchas' when dealing with people like this, and I don't like those types of surprises.

Our new site sponsor E-Arms in Austin (Howard Lane area by appointment only) advertises $15 transfers on his web site.
Love it... Every time raising transfer prices get me thinking of getting an FFL again, a new place doing them for $15 pops up.

Actually, that video is from a hurricane going through my old home town in Jacksonville, FL!

He pretty much represents your average Jax resident!

I use Matt with second amendment arms and ammo. He charges $15.00 now I think. he is off Fry Rd north I-10. I got burned by Fountain once too bought from Gunbroker and it said 20.00. I think I ended up paying 40.00 but that was years and years ago.

This is the one on Hwy 6 in Ft. Bend County that has been in a strip center store front for decades.
I'm thinking back to the 1970s. I dropped them an email to ask the question and I'll post back here if they reply.

Roger that. My time in Houston only dates back to 1990, so I can only account for that period. I first entered their shop in about 1991 and I liked the fact that sales tax was lower in Ft. Bend Co. than in Houston/Harris Co., so that was a plus. I haven't been to the store in a number of years, but it was after their father had passed. I'm not likely to go back.

Downtown Houston was rapidly going to hell by the late 1970s. You could buy a very small highrise condo for <$10K in the 1980s! The NoTsuoh building sold in the 1990s, just before the gentrification wave hit, for, iirc, a little over $300K at a tax sale. (Imagine trying to buy a downtown skyscraper for $300K today!) My memories of that iteration of Fountain Firearms was the epitome of a stuffed-to-the-rafters-with-dusty-old-stuff gun shop, with every dark nook and cranny filled with something even older, more exotic, and more interesting than the last.

Then I remember driving by a few times with the front windows smashed in and hastily repaired. After one of those smash-and-grabs, it just never re-opened. Several years later, the shop on Hwy 6 opened under the same name and I've always wondered if it was family members continuing the tradition or if someone had simply bought the name.

    Sounds about right--with the dusty/musty stuffed-to-the-rafters part.

I spend a lot of time at the local gun shop because it's right down the road from me and I really love the people there. I consider them "Family" and they accept me as family, too.

Their charge for transfers is $25 and it never fails that a person who uses them for transfers makes several trips back to the store for accessories and extras. It boils down to this:

Good customer service is simply good business!

I bought a couple of matching .22 rifles for my daughters from Fountain years back and my FIL bought a nice little .38 a few years later, never had an issue with them. Disappointing to hear that they are charging that much for a transfer fee. Nice shop, always has a lot of inventory and some interesting older stuff to coon finger and lust over, but since my buddy opened his shop not too far north of there, I always end up making the drive an extra few miles and hit Justin up instead.

I made a pretty good deal online on Good Friday. Fountain Firearms in west Houston was on the list of FFL's. I thought why not, they are not too far away and I have been going into their store more than 20 years.

So I went in and identified myself, and he pulled out my shipment. I filled out the 4473 and went to pay him. I handed him $40.00 expecting a standard $35.00 transfer. He said no sir that will be $85.00!!
They must be associated with cheaper than dirt in their outrageous fees.
They will never see me in there again.

They will knock up to $85 off the FFL fee, if you will spend $85 dollars or more in their store when you come to their to store to pickup your firearm. Look on Gunbroker "Find FFL dealers near you by Zip Code for their explanation. Also, Matt Jackson at website, www.2ndaaa.com at 1810 Fry Rd, Houston, Tx 77084. $10 with CHL/LTC; $20 Texas DL. see website for details and appointments.
