So I finally finished the AR15 I have been building for over a year was so excited when I took it to the range only to be promptly bopped in the nose by murphy’s Law and my charging handle. I have now spent most of my time at home for leave tryin to fix the problem. I have changed charging handles and the bolt but it keeps happening. Has anyone else had the problem of the charging handle cycling with the bolt or any possible diagnosis of the problem? Taken it it to 2 gunsmiths and they had never heard of it before. And yes I made sure the charging handle was properly seated and locked. Thanks for any help.

The gas tube looks tweaked. The marks on the bolt and charging handle appear to be from the dragging and interference of the gas tube nipple and the gas key.

They're sticking together during cycle causing the marks you see.

The gas tube is either out of round or slightly bent out of alignment(high shinier spot) on the gas tube nipple. They're easy to bend. Also easy to adjust.

    ...my guess...

If you pull the handle and lock the carrier back (empty mag hold open) does the handle freely slide forward?

What I am looking for is if the charging handle is stuck to the BCG when open.

This was my thought yesterday afternoon. I’m just not sure how to check it.

Take a sharpie and darken the bright areas of the gas tube nipple. Cycle the bolt. See where it's wearing the most. Slightly and gently tweak the gas tube until the rub areas are even.

How would this cause the charging handle to stick to the BCG during cycling?

While I agree that the gas tube looks like it is very tight in the key, I don't see how it would cause the OP's problem.

Is the little bump on the upper receiver where the locking latch hooks onto still there?

I think AaronP220 had this issue once. Believe it was an out of spec charging handle binding on the gas key as it cycled back and forth. Maybe could PM him and ask what the issue was and how he fixed it.

It’s there a bit worn but still there and seems to lock just fine when I pull on the handle.

After reading a bunch of the posts on here and doing some playing I think it’s the gas tube being misaligned not sure if the gas tube is slightly bent or what but I’m gonna play with it a lil more and may try to make it back out to the range to fiddle with it more. Thank y’all for y’all Help and if you have any other suggestions let me know

Gas tubes are easy to bend. I had to bend the hell out of a tube installing a Hogue rubber coated forearm on a 7.5" pistol. The forearm is thick enough to where the bend in the tube had to be entirely changed on profile. Plus during the shaping by hand, the nipple didn't line up at first. As expected.

Good thing is, it's a cheaper part that most gun stores have on hand for about $15. If the tube isn't lined up with the gas key. It'll drag on the bolt. You could feel the drag pulling the charging handle back.

It's easy to adjust without messing the gas tube up.
