I can express my motivation for my choices ...but having to go ‘on the defensive’ to confront an inaccurate assumption about my assessment of the “facts” as I know them, and to defend the values and priorities that I know I have....

Well, that makes for not a great conversation.

I think roach has managed to talk a lot of people out of taking classes, lol.
No kidding! I've been doing this a long time. The worst students I've ever had were the ones who didn't want to be there. Training military and law enforcement can be daunting. Training citizens who self-select and want the information is like a breath of fresh air!

My personal experience is the majority of my Texas LTC students don't seek out actual training. The ones who have; already made the decision to get additional training before they got their LTC.

I see no benefit in debating about training and I never want to give the impression I'm pressuring people into training. If they want information about courses I'll give it; if they want training I'll provide it. Remember, no one likes high pressure sales.

This really degraded from something of value to mindless bickering. That's my fault. My aim was to discuss why people feel they don't need formal training. It seems that people either think they need it, or they think they don't. I hope we are both right.
It doesn’t seem this way to me. This, once again, seems too ‘all or nothing’ to jive with my understanding of the topic of why people choose to train or not. There are too many variables involved to make this assessment so simply. And making quick assumptions about some of these factors as we are going to try to comprehend them is going to seem judgey.

I hope none of my posts came across as "anti training". If you want it or feel you need it then you should go for it.

Some of the most fun I've had has been training on the FATS system. You can put yourself in an almost unlimited number of scenarios most of which are based on actual events. It offers a lot of what typical live fire training can't.

Used to be a place in Waco but I think they closed.

I would like to see more people get their LTC, I think it would be beneficial to the state and the nation. The thread as Roach was presenting it looked to be discouraging that, and that's what I opposed. Saying that formal training would be beneficial, certainly I would agree with, but making it look as if all those that haven't had a lot of formal training are dangerous, to me, sets a bad precedent.

Are you suggesting that shooting a drill to proficiency mean you are going to be able to expand that proficiency to a real world, 360 degree environment?.
I've never seen a 360° berm in real life. I'm sure some range somewhere has it, but no where near me. I plan on eventually building one. I currently have an about 210° berm

^^^ how about inside a dormant volcano?
That can be done - Koko Head range, inside Kahauloa Crater, Oahu island, Hawaii. It's the only public range on the island. In fact, it may be the only public outdoor range in Hawaii; I'm not sure. Of course, there are still several private clubs scattered about the islands and there's even one high school that still has a shooting team!

Of course, Koko Head is just a regular range and you can't shoot 360 degrees but if you ever want to shoot inside a volcano, it's the only U.S. alternative that comes to mind.

    Anybody know of any more?

So much for a fun diversion in my previous post but now I'm thinking seriously.

Does anyone think they'd use a true 360 degree live-fire training facility?

I'm thinking something where you stand in the middle of a dark, 50-foot square and have to make shoot/no-shoot decisions on targets that can appear anywhere around you, from point-blank to 25 feet away, all while the lighting, noise, and other potential distractions are completely out of your control.

It would be expensive but not conceptually difficult to build. I'm just wondering if anyone would use such a thing, given that it would need to rent out at no less than $100/hour and probably twice that.

I’m too busy NOT (only because it’s NOT possible, after all) ‘self-training’ on a new-to-me method of depressing the mag release button to pay any attention to this thread.

30-40 years ago (so long back I can hardly remember) off 1960 around 290 area IIRC there was an old Sandpit range where ya walked down old wooded stairs into the bottom of the pit (30+ foot or more deep) - ya could shoot any direction ya wanted there as long as you were the only ones down there. It was a real dump, trash everywhere - long gone now I reckon - they probably filled it up and built homes on it years ago.

I remember hearing about that place though I never went. Yeah, it was a long time ago.

And I've also heard of practical pistol clubs digging deep pits for 360-degree shooting. Most of the ones I've heard of (I have no first-hand experience) were reputed to have fallen into disuse due to drainage problems.

That's not so bad. I know of one Superfund toxic waste dump in Houston that got lost in all the paperwork, was graded over, and is now a subdivision. I'm willing to bet that not a single homeowner in there knows the history of the location.

I wouldn't doubt there are several across the country. Of course that was back before it was bad for ya.
