I'm new in these parts and I recently received my employment authorization document.

Being from Australia, we don't really have a big gun culture like here in Texas, so I haven't had any experience with firearms until I visited in 2016 and since living here at the start of 2017.

I was wondering if anyone had some tips to get a foot in the door of the firearms industry. I've applied for a gun assembler position at STI, but the other jobs I've seen listed online at the moment seem to call for firearms experts.

    Thanks for reading.

I don't really have any answers for you, just wanted to say "welcome" and at least you picked one of the better states for firearms.

    Welcome to Texas.

And yes, non citizens can own firearms as long as they are here legally with a green/permanent resident card. Speaking from experience, the background check normally takes 1-2 days instead of the 30 minutes it takes my wife to get the all clear.

I'm not sure how being a non citizen would affect you getting a job within the firearms industry. It shouldn't be a problem though

What's your skill set/previous work experience?

Like any industry, there's a lot of facets to the gun industry.

E.g. Marketing, advertising, sales, engineering, even social media (my friend is the social media manager for FN America).

Just 5 years of Burger King, so that doesn't help much.

Welcome to the forum, the state, and the country. I have no idea how you get into the gun industry, but if you figure it out, would you please come back and tell us?

Might try a gun shop, pawn shop, or shooting range. Though the latter may require a R.S.O. certificate. That can be accomplished by taking an N.R.A. Range Safety Officer course. And you can always just go to those places and ask the folks behind the counter how they got their start. That might give you some more avenues to approach.

    Howdy.
You could always just ask the gun shops you frequent if they are looking for any help.
Which side of Australia are you from?
I spent some time around Fremantle/Perth. Lots Of Tooheys.

Unfortunately I don't frequent gun shops yet because I haven't got my green card yet, and from what I've heard, that's what I need to purchase a firearm. I've been shooting my wife's guns.

I'm from Adelaide, South Australia. Lots of Coopers.

Magpul Industries is headquartered here in Austin.

Had quite a bit of Coopers myself when visiting friends in Toorak who lived across the street from Coopers owners.

How soon before you get your green card? Just curious.

In the meantime, you might try looking through a few of the firearms manufacturers and accessories websites and see what they might have posted. And check out the NSSF website and look under the "Jobs" tab. That might also give you some ideas.

Did you marry your wife in the states?
