Was at the Bandera/Mainland WalMart today and picked up 4-250 round boxes of Federal 9mm for $44.46 each. I know there are some deals around but seemed like under $9 for 50 rounds of Federal seems like a good deal. Snatched some 45acp Federal packs as well.

They don't get to order or price their ammo. That's why you just never know what you will find.

That has been said numerous times. However, in the three stores within 10 miles of me the prices are noticeably different. They seem to have about the same selection, but one of the stores is always about 5 to 10% below the average in the area (high volume, older store), one store is almost always exactly on the average for the area and one store is almost always 10% higher (new store)

Wal-Mart's pricing is no longer a standard discount on everything.

The stores who will still price and ad match won't match or honor another Wal-Mart's pricing or their internet price.

They purposefully loose money on a large part of grocery, or really any department they want to, or have the margins so thin because a crazy volume store in one part of a region or market will help other places break even.

They days of the deep discount are over as their buying power can control whole segments or the total output for the year or season of manufacturers or farmers allowing them to control what something is worth. They can even dictate what and how much a manufacturer will produce, who they can sell it to besides Wal-Mart and for how much. All they have to do is just decide to not buy from a source and ruin them. So they have no choice but to do as walmart says.

All of this sounds like a good ol fashion monopoly, and even organised crime, if you live in an area that they come into and then destroy any and all small business and the local economy. They can do this because they can absorb huge losses till they are the only game in town. Will the government ever pull a Ma' Bell like action and bust them up? Do we want the government regulation such basic tenants of free market capitolism? Is what Wal-Mart does really fair free market capitalism.

Tough questions and depend greatly on who you are and where. I mean when they can move into a town and do things like sell everything on the grocery side at a loss, and I do mean everything, but still show a profit and do so, as long as they desire, till every other small business that sells grocery is gone and owners destroyed to the point they could never be in business again then you might want some regulation.

I don't think lower volume items like ammo fall into Any of this except for their pricing scheme, market and regionally wise, but it can be frustrating. Ive seen ammo prices differ a dollar a box for what ever cheap 9mm ammo they had. This was in stores just a couple miles apart. As stated, most stores cant really order anything as the pos system does that according to volume of an item and sales forcasting. Since they dont really have sporting goods managers anymore the closest you can get to ordering ammo is an employee manually correcting on hand discrepancies in the pos system and eventually gets replenished.

When you are this big and have this kind of effect on the economy it's not that far from being like a "company" store that keeps employees in debt to their employer who is the only source of goods and services in an old coal mining town.

The kid at wallyworld tells me he is not allowed to order any ammo for customers. He gets what he gets and the computer prints the price tags. The great computer may well be controlling a vast conspiracy. But the soldiers know not why they fight.
My store just started selling (Non Scary) rifles. He has no control there either. But had to pass a background check and special training just to sell them.

Does WM still have the super secret squirrel special order book under the counter at the sporting goods register?

AS far as I know in some rural stores yes. Again wallyworlds ways are voodoo.
