Don't keep a handgun in your car. Mine always stays on me, unless I go to a place I cant carry it in. I am sure others on here will not agree with me, but if someone breaks into your vehicle, or you loan it to someone and forget about the weapon, or a child is in your vehicle for some reason...........all not good.

Can’t carry a handgun at 18 from y understanding. Just have in house or car. Have to be 21 for that. What would be a good firearm for protection in a vehicle?

Since its to be carried primarily in a vehicle, bulk and weight is not as much of an issue, so a reliable revolver is a more attractive option. Such as a .38 Colt Detective Special. Especially given that you can pick one up used at a pretty reasonable price, so if it does get stolen you are not out much. The .38 Colt Detective Special was at one time the carry gun of choice by law enforcement officers, before pistols became more common. And yes it would be prudent to remove it from the car whenever possible.

What kind of car? What’s the purpose of the handgun? How secure will the car be when there’s no one in it?

invest in a exBrinks truck to make sure your hand gun is safe if you leave it in there.

You will not be able to purchase a handgun from an FFL. Meaning any dealer or gunshop. So you will have to find an inividual with a handgun that is willing to sell it to you. Which is perfectly legal, but may not give you a great selection to choose from. As for the M&P compact 2.0 it would be a great choice for a first handgun IMO.
