I had cataract surgery two years ago and now have 20/20 distance vision. But can't see the front sight without cheaters and then it's hard to see the target. What I have works for pistol but at longer rifle ranges it's a problem. Any doc suggestions who has worked with shooters?

I can't help with your issue, but in the event others need cheaters to see pistol sights, like I do, I recently found cheater safety glasses on Amazon.
    Just as an FYI.

My vision went from great to my arms are too short rather quickly. So what I've got now are bifocals with just a tad bit of adjustment for a bit more than driving distances, my request, and quite a bit of magnification for reading distances, doctor's requirement. I have read various articles where shooters have had semi-bifocal ballistics glasses made with the bifocal part reversed. If I remember right, it was kinda pricey though. And I can't remember if the cost was more for the ballistic lenses or the reversal. Though I would pretty much assume the former.

Thought I saved those articles, nope. Might try calling your local Eye Doc and see what they can recommend. Even my VA doc. was receptive to the idea but, could't help on my out of pocket cost.

Same exact problem for me. If someone could solve this they would be my new best friend.

No thread on this subject is complete with referencing the fantastic work of Dr. Norman Wong. I will, however, note two caveats:
    • His advice is best (not exclusively, just best) suited to pure target shooting, i.e. bullseye, and
    • If you follow his advice and provide his guide to your eye doctor, IME the actual chance your doctor will read it and follow it is slim to none.

Just saw this website mentioned in a video on YouTube. Might be what you're looking for.

Hey Byrd, I got some of those for my wife off of amazon when they had them for $29. She had laser eye surgery and now sees clear at a distance but up close she needs cheaters. She couldn't see her front sight clearly but now she has no problems.

I went to my opthamologist last year and told him the exact distance I wanted focused for shooting glasses and they hooked me up. I've found that they try to get people fitted with lenses that work for the majority of things, but I had explicit needs for pistol shooting and they ended up giving me a couple of prescriptions. Just a thought.

Yeah, they can do that. It's especially easy when you specify the distance. There are still some good points to consider among Dr. Wong's writings.

A note for diabetics - Changes in blood sugar change your eyesight. If you're shooting a match under pressure over time and you're diabetic, your front sight will go in and out of focus. Your prescription can easily change a full diopter in less than an hour. I have some adjustable lenses that solve the problem but I thought it was worth pointing out that precision shooting for diabetics is enormously more complicated than for people without that condition.

Gonzo , I have the same issue I can see distance pretty good but front sight is blurry. I notice there is a top bifocal and a bottom bifocal. How do you decide Which one ?

Hey Rusty, they have two different types of safety glasses. One has the the bifocal on the bottom like regular glasses for reading. For shooting, get the ones with the bifocals on top. As you bring your gun up, with just a slight tilt of your head the top bifocal will be right where you need it. They also come with extra lenses with and without the bifocal so you can just have it on your dominant eye if you choose.

I would recommend polycarbonate or Trivex as a material to request for your glasses if you plan on using them to shoot with. You can ask your doctor to adjust the add power to whatever distance you want. The top can be for the target and the add power for whatever length you want. I've made glasses for shooters that want the add power for the end of the rifle. I make them.
