Way better than ear buds. They use the same type of phone as the cheap foam ear plugs (best noise reduction IMO).

I used them in the house the other day while my son was watching one of the new horribly annoying kids shows and arguing about random crap with my daughter. Muted external sound and watched a podcast on YouTube.
Well, that seems to pay for itself right there.

How long does it last? I really like the foam plugs, too, but can only get a few uses out of a pair. They are designed to be disposable....

I'm wondering if you could just order the replacement tips to stick on your existing ear buds.

I've used these 4-5 times with no sign of wear. They have some type of coating so they don't get ear wax and dirt imbedded in them.

There is a company called canal foam or something that makes foam tips for ear buds also. They list certain models. You wouldn't have the ability to let sound pass through, but may not matter for your use.

Awesome... time for me to check them out. Trying to get a good cheek weld and not blow out my eardrums with the rifles is challenging.
I think they work great, especially when shooting a scoped rifle, don't have the earmuffs in the way.
