Since I have been working out and losing more fat and gaining muscle, I have noticed my energy level go sky high. My mood is better and generally it has made my overall health much better.

I read alot on health and nutrution and I have wondered what my T level is so I called my doc and ask how involved it was to get tested.
My interest is just to know what my baseline is and if it's normal.
They said without any symptoms of "low T" that insurance wouldn't want to pay for it.
Fine, I get that, but can I just walk into a lab and get my T level and thyroid function checked and pay cash and me get the results without getting a doctor involved?

You can. Check your area for labs that do DNA testing, they can test for that too.

If you are in DFW, I have a referral for you.

Yes you can just go pay for a test and get your results with no doctor involved. However, as I understand it, T level is a range and different for everyone.

If you go to a clinic that primarily sells Testosterone injections / pellets / supplements, then I would expect to be told that the T level was low. They like to accompany the tests with enough questions so that you say yes to at least a few to help convince you that you need the supplement.

I'm a glass half empty type though. If you've got the time, or they start doing any specials, I'd consider getting the blood work done at more than one location just to compare the numbers as I'm not sure how accurate these tests really are.

But I also know some folks who have gotten the shots from clinics that went under and the new clinic said their numbers were way too high and adjusted the dosage, so there are honest ones out there I guess.

All i want is my level tested.
I have no symptoms of Low T, but I'd still like to know

I'll call some labs here locally
I agree I want a general lab and not one that tries to sell you stuff

    They test right there ?
    I can't promise. But,
I spent all day last year trying to get a 5 panel drug screen in Abilene for my employer.
Got more questions than help, till I walked in their door.
No questions. Did the test, faxed the results, took the company card for payment.
    I'd start there .

If I feel this good and find out my levels could be better , then bring it on because it can only make me feel even better and help me gain more muscle mass from my workouts

The only thing that worries me about it is a video I saw, on one of those clinics websites. It explained how testosterone production is regulated in the body. It left me with the impression that the replacement testosterone would limit the bodies natural production of testosterone, which means you might become dependent on it. I'm not sure if stopping treatment means your body picks back up where it left off, or if it's just gotten used to no longer producing adequate testosterone. All the sites I went to seem to agree, once you start, they think it's something you should continue for the rest of your life.

That was my thinking as well.

My Dr. just had me stop injections about 3 weeks ago. My red blood cell count has been high for a year or so.
He wants to see if the T might be causing it.

Due to steroid use in my late teens/early 20's, I have extremely low t.

After getting my levels up with injections, I've been taking androgel (rub it on your shoulders in the morning) for a few years, it really helps to maintain normal levels.

Your body isn't going to make more T than it does today. If you need to elevate your levels to be normal, then IMHO do it...it ain't gonna happen otherwise.

    It really is a game-changer.
Do it under a doc's supervision and get blood work done every three months.

Also, the gel has way fewer incidents of adverse side effects

I didn't know I had Low T until my Dr. told me I did, after a blood test.

I thought I had cancer or low T a couple years ago. Lethargic, no energy or desire to exercise. I had every test ran that the labs do.

No cancer, no heart issues, no high blood pressure.

I thought if it wasn't that it would be low T, but that was around 500, which for my age is decent.

We reconstructed my diet the previous week (which was just like the other weeks prior) and I had eaten red meat 12 times.

I'm now on a 5 time limit, and eating three salads with chicken or fish. Its crazy how much better I feel, how much more energy I have and have lost weight too. I also quit drinking cokes.

I miss all that beef, but I sure like feeling like a human again.

Low T can kick you in the tail before you know it. Low T is a common side effect of taking cholesterol reducing drugs (statins). T level can drop into the double digits (if I recall properly, 300 is the minimum level in the normal range, but not 100% sure). Docs often neglect to tell patients this, much less test for T level to see what is happening. I would strongly urge anyone on cholesterol reducing drugs to get their T level checked.

You can lose muscle mass and endurance in a hurry. And when you are old, it takes a long time to get even just a portion of that back.

The T gels work very well for most people.

From what I read once you start on the shots or whatever it's forever. Your body quits making it relying on the shots and won't start up again. Ask your Dr about that before anything. Mine agreed that's the way it worked. No thanks I take enough pills now.

The reason you take T medication (or the only reason you should be taking T) is because your body is already not producing enough. So you already have a problem and not taking T medication will just make things worse. Trust me. Your body does not stop making any T at all as it will continue to put out the less than needed levels, but the medication is just supplementing T directly rather than stimulating the body's natural ability to produce T. Apparently no drugs are available that will increase the body's own manufacture of T.

If you get your T’s tested. Make sure you get your free testosterone tested. That means a lot. That is what counts. As we get older more of our T gets bound-up and unavailable. The free T is what’s bioavailable to our tissues. The amount of T taken has to be increased to increase the amount of free T.

    That's interesting.
I've been pre-diabetic for many years.
I started a low carb diet a while back due to increasingly A1c levels, it had gotten up to 9.
My latest blood test showed it down to 6, which is still high, but a great improvement.

Of course this means I'm eating more red meat, lol.
