I'm thinking a want to build at least an upper for the .450 if not a complete rifle. Any thoughts on why this is a good or bad idea besides the cost of ammo.

I have one. Off the bench it'll loosen teeth. I installed a rubber recoil pad on the m4 stock. Standing up, it feels like a stout and solid 12ga. It's not something you run though a lot of ammo on.

Fun to shoot? Loud? Painful? Oh yEah.

A half box of ammo is all you'll want to shoot. You can load another magazine. 5 more rounds...

I made the mistake of using a 2# Geissele trigger in the lower. It's enough recoil to bunch fire. I went two rounds automatic with a super light trigger. It needs a heavier one. No clue where the second round went. Ka-ka-boom. Two shell casings on the table.

Magazines are finicky. At least on the bushmaster upper. The mag has problems feeding from an open bolt. Stuck in the rifle and racked, it'll work. Open bolt and it'll jam. The bushmaster mag sucks but works.

I hear ya, I've looked at the many different options and often find it hard to decide what I want to build next, of course that sometimes gets put on the back burner when I find another handgun that interests me.

At least with the .450 Bushmaster you didn't pick the scary high powered assault cartridge .223.

That .223 is one scary round. I've heard it causes instant ptsd after shooting it and it's a load scarry round just like you were in a war zone

    I have a 450 bushy as well.
    It’s loads of fun!
As stated above the magazines can be finicky.
Mine has a brake of unknown origins, and while it is quite loud, recoil is not too bad.
As for 450 vs 458, it usually comes down to bullet choice.
If you handload for 45, you can use those bullets in the 450.
If you handload for 45-70, or some other 458, you can use those in 458 Socom.

Has anyone tried a hydraulic buffer system with this type of setup?

For the cost and the reviews about it. You'd be better off adding weight to the rifle. The most uncomfortable position is off the bench. Using a bag or bipod. It'll push you back pretty good. It'll also loosen the bipod or Damn near pop it off. You also have to watch the scope in the rings. The scope will slide forward 1/16".

I mounted a medium size limbsaver recoil pad. Drilled holes in the butt of the stock and bolted it solid. None of that slip on stuff. Without a recoil pad it hurts. It'll bruise your shoulder.

It's not that bad of recoil. Just have it tight against your shoulder and a good grip on the rifle. Because when it's go's off. It's a serious thump.

last time I went to the range I found about 20 pieces of the 450 brass on the ground, surprised who ever shot it didn't pick it up. The recoil is that stout? It looked like my 45/70 brass at first glance and that doesn't have a lot a recoil.

450 has almost the exact same ballistics and recoil(assuming the same weight rifle) as an in-line muzzloader shooting 45 cal bullets over a 150 grain charge of pyrodex.

The fact that ARs are generally light and have poor ergonomics amplify the recoil.
